But just after 7 p.m., the airline tweeted, "A ground stop is in place for domestic flights due to an IT issue. We’re working on a resolution. We apologize for the inconvenience."

Travelers took to social media to complain about delays and other travel issues, including a flight landing in what one passenger described as "total darkness."

Officials told NBC News that the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, or ACARS, was having low-bandwidth issues.

The ground stop did not affect international flights or flights from Hawaii or Alaska, according to ABC 7 Chicago.
