29-Year-Old Dies After Building Explosion, Collapse On Chicago's West Side

The man suffered extensive burns after the incident Tuesday, according to the Chicago Fire Department, which reported Friday he had died.

CHICAGO, IL — A man has died after an explosion caused a partial building collapse on the West Side earlier in the week, according to officials.

The man succumbed to his injuries, the Chicago Fire Department reported Friday, after being taken Tuesday to Loyola Medical Center with extensive burns. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Shabron Robinson, a 29-year-old who lived in the area.

Eight people were taken to hospitals after the explosion occurred around 9 a.m. on the top floor of an apartment building near West End and North Central avenues, causing a neighboring building to collapse partially, the fire department reported.

About 135 first responders were dispatched to the scene, as was the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to the department, which reported Tuesday that an unknown number of residents were displaced by the incident.

Of the eight people transported to medical facilities, three were in critical to serious condition Tuesday, the department reported, adding the victims’ injuries ranged from burns to traumatic injuries.
