Wanted California Man Fatally Shot By Amtrak Police Identified

The 33-year-old boarded a train to Chicago with a gun within hours of killing a man in the San Francisco Bay Area, authorities said.

CHICAGO — The man fatally shot by Amtrak police Tuesday at Union Station has been identified as a Northern California resident who fled the state shortly after authorities believe murdered a man there.

Jamar Jason Taylor, of San Leandro, was wanted in connection with a fatal shooting that took place Friday, according to a charges filed Tuesday in Alameda County.

Taylor, 33, has past felony convictions and was on probation at the time of the incident, according to the charges.

He was accused of killing a man Friday morning in the 8800 block of International Boulevard in Oakland, and police said he was identified from video surveillance, according to an affidavit in support of the charges obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times. The victim was a 55-year-old Oakland resident, the East Bay Times reported. He has yet to be publicly identified.

Over the weekend, Taylor boarded a California Zephyr Amtrak train from Emeryville to Chicago, authorities said.

As he emerged onto a platform at Union Station around 5 p.m. Tuesday, Taylor was confronted by Amtrak police who had been notified about the warrants for his arrest, according to railroad and police spokespeople.

Police said Taylor spotted the uniformed officers and opened fire as he fled. An officer returned fire, striking Taylor in the chest. No one else was hit, and a gun was found at the scene, according to police.

Paramedics rushed Taylor to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office determined he died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.
