Chicago Snow: A Guide to Where and When the Snow Falls

Find out when the snow is expected to start flying in the Chicago area and which areas will be hardest hit during the Friday commute.

CHICAGO, IL — You may want to start your weekend early if possible so as to avoid the winter weather expected to hit the Chicago area during this evening’s commute. Snow should develop across the area this afternoon and become moderate to heavy at times across far northeast Illinois later this afternoon and into the early evening hours.

By 3 p.m., there is an 80 to 100 percent chance of snow falling for most of the Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service.

Snowfall rates up to one inch per hour are expected at the height of the storm this afternoon and evening with towns closer to the Wisconsin-Illinois border expected to be the hardest hit.

“Snow-covered roads and reduced visibilities will result in treacherous conditions and longer commute times,” according to weather officials. A winter weather advisory has been issued for all of northern Illinois, which took effect starting at noon today and will continue through 6 a.m. on Sunday.

Snowfall amounts between 3 to 5 inches are possible this afternoon and evening. Snow will continue on Saturday with the Chicago area expected to see total snowfall amounts of 3 to 8 inches during the course of the storm.
