Symetra, Gallagher Benefit Services and the Chicago Bears honored Willa Cather Elementary School teacher Edward Williams as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” on Nov. 29 during a surprise classroom presentation. Chicago Bears Linebacker Roy Robertson-Harris was a special guest, congratulating Williams on his award. Williams teaches seventh grade at the pre-K–8 school located in Chicago’s East Garfield community.
“Mr. Williams is truly a hardworking teacher, who arrives at school early and stays late. His love for sports permeates his coaching at Willa Cather, including flag football, basketball, and track and field,” said colleague Varita Williams. “Mr. Williams began an after-school program called Open Gym, which he facilitates on his own time and with his own money. It gives children an opportunity to practice their sports skills and provides a safe environment.” Williams nominated Williams for the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom® award.
“I have the utmost respect for Mr. Williams and all he does with and for the children here at Willa Cather Elementary,” added Williams. “As a co-worker, it has been a pleasure learning from his example.”

Williams is one of 16 K–12 teachers in the Chicago area who will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2016 NFL season. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations, and they receive a $1,000 donation for classroom books and supplies. In addition, they receive tickets to a Bears home game and are acknowledged during an on-field presentation at Soldier Field. Williams will be recognized at the Dec. 4 game when the Bears take on the San Francisco 49ers.
Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The winners are selected based on their ability to make a real difference in students' lives; to go above and beyond in their day-to-day responsibilities; and to help students build life skills.
