#WomanLifeFreedom Mural Created in Support of Women Around the World

Addison & Clark Partners with TEDxWrigleyville for Outdoor Mural Creation by Natalie Shugailo

While the United States works to remove Iran from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for abusing the rights of women and girls, Chicago retail development Addison & Clark is partnering with TEDxWrigleyville to show support for all women by commissioning the creation of an outdoor mural titled #WomenLifeFreedom at the company’s 1025 W Addison retail space.

The piece, painted by Ukrainian American artist & muralist Natalie Shugailo, represents the intergenerational support for women’s rights and freedom to speak up, and is a collaboration between an internationally minded group of curators and artists, and artist on the ground in Iran who must remain anonymous for safety reasons. The design is of Persian style, including the colors which are often reflected in rugs and clothing, but was created as symbol for all women around the world.

To the far left is the figure of a teenager, which many are of the protestors seen all over the news, who holds a white scarf on a staff as a symbol of peace. The artist has chosen not to veil her hair, a highly and dangerous act in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

To the far right is the figure of an older woman with a life of experience mostly behind her. She veils her hair in a way that is deemed insufficient by the Islamic Republic’s standards and could get her killed but stands in solidarity with those who do not. She holds a beacon of light as a symbol of enlightenment and hope.

The central figure is a woman, perhaps a young mother, who is holding a flag with the words from the song, “Baraye,” which has become the anthem for the current revolution in Iran. The trending hashtag, #WomanLifeFreedom echoes the many voices on the ground.

“Haunted by the suffering of the people of Iran who risk their lives every day, it’s our humble pride to unveil this symbol of their power,” says Shermin Kruse, professor, author and founding producer of TEDxWrigleyville. “Our sisters and brothers, we are far from them, but we stand with them.”

The #WomenLifeFreedom mural project was created through a partnership with TEDxWrigleyville and Addison & Clark. The wall was donated by Addison & Clark while the design and inspiration for the image was coordinated and produced by Sher Kruse, June Kim, Maaike Almeida, and Eboni Gates.

“I've always loved creating and feel it is the purest way to connect with others,” explains artist/muralist Shugailo. “Images are all-inclusive and can speak to anyone while having no limitations with their interpretations and transcending languages and cultural backgrounds. Art is comforting and healing, and in my creation I hope to bring a sense of calm and joy to the viewer. I strive to create compelling work that awakens the spirit, and continually pays homage to the beautiful natural world around us that we all share.”

The #WomenLifeFreedom mural will be unveiled on Thursday, November 10th at 4:30pm at 1025 West Addison with a small gathering that will include local dignitaries, supporters and team members from Addison & Clark and TEDxWrigleyville.
