1-Year Old Dies In Accidental Drowning

A 1-year-old girl accidentally fell into a bucket and drowned at a home in Chicago Heights, according to police.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL - The death of a 1-year-old girl who was found unresponsive in a Chicago Heights home on Sept. 25 was the victim of an accidental drowning, investigations by police and child services show. The death of the girl, who has not yet been publicly identified, was determined to be an accident by the Child Advocacy and Protective Services Unit, according to Chicago Heights police.

Police responded to the home in the 100 block of East 25th Street just after noon on Sept. 25 to find paramedics removing the girl, an 18-month-old, from the backyard. She was taken to Franciscan Health Olympia Fields Hospital in critical condition and died there a few days later on Oct. 1.

The girl's mother, a 29-year-old woman, was at the home when police responded and interviewed her. They determined after an investigation that the young girl had fallen into a bucket that was left in the kitchen on accident and drowned.

"This case has been deemed closed," Chicago Heights Police Chief Thomas Rogers said.
