2022 Courage Award Honorees Announced

The Franciscan Health Graduate Medical Education (GME) team will be honored with the Courage Award at the 20th Franciscan Health Foundation Golf Classic.

This year’s Franciscan Health Foundation Golf Classic will be held on Monday, August 15, at Olympia Fields Country Club.

Developed by Franciscan Health and VITAS® Healthcare 10 years ago, the Courage Award honors inspirational individuals and groups who demonstrate exemplary courage and commitment in their fight against life-threatening conditions or in the support of others facing healthcare challenges.

This year’s award recognizes the leadership, dedication and innovation demonstrated by the entire GME team, which educates and prepares new physicians for medical practice in a variety of medical disciplines.

“Healthcare is evolving, medicine is evolving, and medical education is evolving,” said VITAS director of market development Karianne Craig, MHA, “and the Franciscan Health GME program is bravely taking on the rapidly changing world of healthcare for this next generation of healthcare heroes.”

To stay current with the dynamic changes in healthcare, Franciscan Health Olympia Fields recently announced that it will open a new medical simulation center to help clinical personnel further develop complex skills and to develop expertise with advanced healthcare technologies. Funds raised at this year’s Franciscan Health Classic will be dedicated to the new medical simulation center.

In presenting the Courage Award, VITAS—the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care—recognizes that the Franciscan Health Graduate Medical Team shares its core values:

“We developed the Courage Award in collaboration with the Franciscan Health Foundation,” said Margaret Sheetz, VITAS senior account representative. “It’s especially appropriate that we recognize the GME team at an event dedicated to raising funds for the new medical simulation center.”

“This recognition is a huge honor for our program,” said the GME program institutional officer at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields, Matthew Brown, MD. “Our entire GME team is focused on providing extensive training for the next generation of physician leaders.”
