Balmoral Race Track On Fire: Reports

CRETE TOWNSHIP, IL — The former Balmoral Race Track was ablaze Sunday morning outside Crete, according to reports.

The Crete Police Department warned residents around 7:30 a.m. that multiple agencies were battling a large structure fire along Route 1, with the highway closed between Crete-Monee Road and Elms Court Lane.

“You will see smoke and haze throughout our village as a result,” the department said in a social media post, urging residents to stay away from the area of the fire.

Flames were coming through the roof at the track, WLS reported. The horse racing destination closed several years ago, according to NBC Chicago.
