The CHMS SEL Initiative See Students Work with Canine Therapists

The students at CHSD170’s Chicago Heights Middle School (CHMS) are participating in a Canine Assisted Therapy Services (C.A.T.S.) program every Wednesday.
The Cook County Juvenile Council known as SEL in Action sponsors the program. Dog trainer Tony Gordon brings in a different therapy dog each week.
This innovative and engaging learning experience provides a safe, calm environment that facilitates positive interaction and interpersonal growth. Participation in the services allows participants to focus on behavior modification and leadership skills.

“As a vital addition to our school’s SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) initiative, the students enjoy working with the dogs and look forward to seeing them every Wednesday,” said CHMS Assistant Principal Shawnell Nash.

CHMS Principal Chris Baikauskas agreed with Nash’s assessment, saying: “Offering our students the opportunity of participating in such a marvelous program is a wonderful adjunct to their normal classroom activities while teaching essential and vital skills that they will use all their lives.”
According to Canine Assisted Therapy Inc.’s website, its mission is to improve the health and well-being of children and adults by achieving specific physical, cognitive, social, or emotional goals through certified pet therapy teams.

Los estudiantes de la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights (CHMS) de CHSD170 participan en un programa de Servicios de Terapia Asistida Canina (C.A.T.S.) todos los miércoles.
El Consejo Juvenil del Condado de Cook, conocido como SEL in Action, patrocina el programa. El entrenador de perros Tony Gordon trae un perro de terapia diferente cada semana.
