CHMS Spartans Clash in Staff vs. Student Basketball Showdown

In a packed gym overflowing with excitement and Spartan pride, the Chicago Heights Middle School hosted its first-ever Staff vs. Student Basketball Game on Tuesday, May 20.

The entire CHMS community—students, staff, and faculty—united for an unforgettable afternoon of friendly competition, school spirit, and community connection, demonstrating our shared values and commitment to each other.

The game was a nail-biter from start to finish, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats. The student team brought energy and athleticism, racing up and down the court with impressive coordination. The staff team, powered by teamwork and experience, kept pace with hustle and determination. Ultimately, the students pulled out a thrilling 52–49 victory, edging past their teachers in the final minutes.

“We want to start this as a new tradition at CHMS,” said Principal Chris Baikauskas. “It’s an incredible way to build relationships, celebrate school spirit, and bring everyone together.”

Adding an extra layer of excitement and fun, PE teacher Ryan Kvasnicka made history by suiting up for both teams, giving it his all on both sides of the court throughout the game.

Also playing a key role in the day’s success was CHSD170 Superintendent Tom Amadio, who served as one of the referees for the event.

“An event like this is exactly what I dreamed CHMS would become, bringing our community together through pride, joy, and connection,” Amadio said. “It was an honor to be a part of it.”

The contest’s halftime show was energetic, keeping the crowd engaged and excited. The CHMS Cheerleaders took center court and delivered a spirited performance that brought the audience to their feet, setting the tone for the second half with their hard work and school pride.

Following the cheer performance, students participated in a Half-Court Shooting Competition. Sixth-grader Darryck Brown stole the spotlight by sinking a shot from center court, earning a thunderous round of applause and taking home the win.

Kenyea Beach, SD170’s SEL (Social/Emotional Learning) Coordinator and CHMS substitute teacher Ariana Dampier provided the game’s play-by-play commentary and kept the crowd energized and informed throughout the event.

The Staff team roster for the event was: Officer Kenyatta Jarrett, Karl Harris, Antwan Lira, Vincent Green, John Oliver, Jenna Kwasek, Nicholas White, Christopher Murphy, Dani King, Janaya Rice, Elizabeth Babb, Sheldon Jones, Kat Strong, Phil Alexander, Jack Lira, and Ryan Kvasnicka. Jimmy Riley coached the staff squad.

En un gimnasio repleto de emoción y orgullo Spartan, la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights celebró su primer partido de baloncesto entre personal y estudiantes el martes 20 de mayo.

El espectáculo de medio tiempo del concurso fue enérgico, manteniendo al público motivado y entusiasmado. Las animadoras de CHMS ocuparon la cancha central y ofrecieron una actuación enérgica que puso al público de pie, marcando la pauta para la segunda mitad con su esfuerzo y orgullo escolar.

Después de la actuación de las animadoras, los estudiantes participaron en una competencia de tiro de media cancha. El estudiante de sexto grado, Darryck Brown, se robó la atención al encestar un tiro desde la cancha central, lo que le valió una ovación atronadora y se llevó la victoria.
