CHSD170’s CHMS Choir Earns the Top Spot at the Recent IGSMA Contest

Thirteen students from Chicago Heights Middle School Choir recently participated and earned first-place honors at the Illinois Grade School Music Association's (IGMSA) District VI Choir Contest on March 4th at Liberty Jr. High School in New Lenox.

Choir members included David Alexander, Maritza Guerrero Chavez, Alexandra Cornejo, Dulce Cornejo, Samara Coopwood, Anye Dawson, Sophia Hernandez, Sirr McCoy, Winona Pender, Yadah Pickett, Terrence Smith, Fidel Vega, and Nayla Lopez-Velazquez.

Under Sabrina Steck's direction, the choir performed three songs: Firefly, arranged by Lynn Shaw Bailey, Celebration of Life by Sally K. Albrecht (Dulce Cornejo, soloist), and African Alleluia by Jay Althouse.

The IGSMA holds different ensemble contests every spring, and this contest was choir specific. For the competition, choirs compete for a ranking from three expert judges.

“I explained to the students that the judges would only be grading our choir based on our overall performance and not against the other participating schools. Our choir was judged on a rubric including basic music tenets. Those principles included categories such as stage presence, tone quality, pitch accuracy, and dynamics,” Steck said.

“Our choir qualified for a first-place ranking based on the judges' rankings. The students received individual medals for their performance, and our school received a plaque that will soon be engraved and hung in our building.”

After the performance, one of the judges, Robert A. Boyd, a composer and retired Music educator who is an old teacher of Steck, gave the choir a short clinic making minor improvements to the numbers performed.

“Mr. Boyd's instruction was an amazing experience, and the students responded well to the feedback,” Steck noted.

“Eventually, the students started to break out of their shells, incorporating the suggestions into their singing while having fun doing so.”

“I so enjoyed seeing my students sing and have fun during this time! Since Mr. Boyd is my old teacher and mentor, it was a full circle moment as someone who had taught me so much was now teaching my students,” she concluded.

Steck praised her students' commitment to excellence and cited her pride in them being the first from District 170 to be ranked, let alone take a first-place honor, at the contest.

Trece estudiantes del Coro de la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights participaron recientemente y obtuvieron honores de primer lugar en el Concurso de Coros del Distrito VI de la Asociación de Música de la Escuela Primaria de Illinois (IGMSA) el 4 de marzo en Liberty Jr. High School en New Lenox.

Bajo la dirección de Sabrina Steck, el coro interpretó tres canciones: Firefly, con arreglos de Lynn Shaw Bailey, Celebration of Life de Sally K. Albrecht (Dulce Cornejo, solista) y African Alleluia de Jay Althouse.

El IGSMA realiza diferentes concursos de conjuntos cada primavera, y este concurso fue específico para coros. Para la competencia, los coros compiten por una clasificación de tres jueces expertos.

“Les expliqué a los estudiantes que los jueces solo calificarían nuestro coro en función de nuestro desempeño general y no en contra de las otras escuelas participantes. Nuestro coro fue juzgado según una rúbrica que incluía principios musicales básicos. Esos principios incluían categorías como la presencia en el escenario, la calidad del tono, la precisión del tono y la dinámica”, dijo Steck.

“Nuestro coro calificó para un ranking de primer lugar basado en las clasificaciones de los jueces. Los estudiantes recibieron medallas individuales por su desempeño y nuestra escuela recibió una placa que pronto será grabada y colgada en nuestro edificio”.

Después de la actuación, uno de los jueces, Robert A. Boyd, un compositor y educador de música jubilado que es un antiguo maestro de Steck, le dio al coro una breve clínica para hacer pequeñas mejoras en los números interpretados.

"Señor. La instrucción de Boyd fue una experiencia increíble y los estudiantes respondieron bien a los comentarios”, señaló Steck.

“Eventualmente, los estudiantes comenzaron a salir de sus caparazones, incorporando las sugerencias en su canto mientras se divertían haciéndolo”.

“¡Disfruté mucho ver a mis alumnos cantar y divertirse durante este tiempo! Dado que el Sr. Boyd es mi antiguo maestro y mentor, fue un momento de círculo completo ya que alguien que me había enseñado tanto ahora estaba enseñando a mis alumnos”, concluyó.

Steck elogió el compromiso de sus estudiantes con la excelencia y mencionó su orgullo por ser los primeros del Distrito 170 en ser clasificados, y mucho menos en obtener el primer lugar en el concurso.
