CHSD170’s Garfield School Kicks Off Bully Prevention Month

Chicago Heights School District 170’s Garfield School recently held a special assembly to kick off their Bully Prevention Month activities.

The school’s PBIS (Positive Behavioral and Intervention Supports) team planned the event for Garfield’s SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and positive school culture initiative.

The students were buzzing with excitement, their eyes wide and their hearts racing, as they watched America’s Got Talent participant Matt Wilhelm perform amazing BMX bike tricks and listened to his important message about the value of hard work. His story of overcoming bullying and learning new skills resonated with the students, who were inspired by his journey.

Wilhelm shared a deeply personal story with the students, recounting how he was once a victim of bullying. He then captivated them with his journey of learning BMX bike tricks and the incredible places he visited while performing. His story, a testament to resilience and determination, left a lasting impression on the students, inspiring them to believe in their own potential.

The students’ enthusiasm throughout the assembly was palpable, a clear sign of their engagement. As a special treat, Garfield’s September Golden Gator students were awarded a cool poster autographed by Matt, which they proudly displayed in the school corridors, a testament to their active participation in the event.

Garfield’s Golden Gator initiative is a monthly award program that recognizes one student from each classroom. The student is nominated by their classroom teacher for being a good friend and citizen and following the weekly PBIS Cool Tools. At the end of each month, the Golden Gators have their photo taken and displayed on a special bulletin board by the library, select a special prize from Principal Diane Kostovski, and participate in a special Golden Gator “Walk of Fame” celebrating their recognition!

Several of Mrs. Graves’s 2nd-grade students were thrilled with the event, saying things like: “The wheelies were the best; the ‘time machine’ was cool cause he had to keep practicing and learning; and the handstand was my favorite part because he never gave up!”

According to his website, Wilhelm’s school assembly program combines amazing BMX bike tricks with educational character messages centering on kindness, positivity, anti-bullying measures, and the difference one person can make.

Principal Kostovski opined that Wilhelm’s message's efficacy was vitally important in supporting the school’s focus on kindness.

“This assembly not only launched National Bullying Awareness Month but also served as a fantastic conclusion to our first quarter’s SEL focus on kindness,” she said.

“Throughout the quarter, students explored kindness through themed texts and class discussions and participated in various activities. Mr. Wilhelm’s program helped to reinforce the message of kindness while captivating students with his high-energy tricks!” Kostovski concluded.

La iniciativa Golden Gator de Garfield es un programa de premios mensual que reconoce a un estudiante de cada aula. El estudiante es nominado por su maestro de clase por ser un buen amigo y ciudadano y seguir las herramientas semanales de PBIS Cool Tools. Al final de cada mes, los Golden Gators se toman una foto y se exhiben en un tablón de anuncios especial de la biblioteca, seleccionan un premio especial de la directora Diane Kostovski y participan en un "Paseo de la Fama" especial del Golden Gator que celebra su reconocimiento.

Varios de los estudiantes de 2º grado de la Sra. Graves estaban encantados con el evento, diciendo cosas como: "Los caballitos fueron los mejores; La 'máquina del tiempo' era genial porque tenía que seguir practicando y aprendiendo; Y la parada de manos fue mi parte favorita porque nunca se rindió".

Según su sitio web, el programa de asamblea escolar de Wilhelm combina increíbles trucos de bicicleta BMX con mensajes educativos de carácter centrados en la amabilidad, la positividad, las medidas contra el acoso y la diferencia que puede marcar una persona.

El director Kostovski opinó que la eficacia del mensaje de Wilhelm era de vital importancia para apoyar el enfoque de la escuela en la bondad.

"Esta asamblea no solo lanzó el Mes Nacional de Concientización sobre el Acoso, sino que también sirvió como una conclusión fantástica para nuestro enfoque SEL del primer trimestre en la bondad", dijo.

"A lo largo del trimestre, los estudiantes exploraron la bondad a través de textos temáticos y discusiones en clase y participaron en diversas actividades. El programa del Sr. Wilhelm ayudó a reforzar el mensaje de bondad mientras cautivaba a los estudiantes con sus trucos de alta energía". concluyó Kostovski.
