CHSD170’s Garfield School’s Family Reading Night is a Great Success

CHSD170’s Garfield School recently sponsored a well-attended Family Reading Night to promote literacy through the love of reading.

The school-wide event focused on two storybook characters appearing in multiple books in hopes that an intrinsic love of reading would develop. The characters were the lovable and groovy Pete the Cat (chosen for grades K-2) and Dogman, an age-appropriate graphic novel (chosen for grades 2-5).

“It was my hope to plant a seed of curiosity for what these characters will be doing in the next book, possibly promoting great reading habits while instilling a lifelong love for reading,” said Rebecca Higgs, Garfield’s Reading Specialist.

“Family Reading Night was a wonderful opportunity to encourage enthusiasm for reading,” Higgs continued.

“Beyond the books, it was about bringing our school community together, creating memories, and fostering a love for learning!”

Garfield School Principal Diane Kostovski extended upon those thoughts, expressing her gratitude for the amazing staff, community partners, and donors.

"Their support made it possible for our students and families to explore the fabulous world of literature, and we couldn't have done it without them!" she said.

In true Garfield fashion, many staff members came together to share their time and talents with the parents and students. Among the volunteers were Carol Saba, Kindergarten teacher; Juana Salazar, K-5 Instructional Coach; Emy Flores, first-grade teacher; Sarah Repking, third-grade teacher; Alfredo Ferreira, Dual-language third-grade teacher; Stacy Harris, Interventionist; Elvia Estrada, Dual-language Kindergarten teacher; Maria Robinette, Reading Specialist; Milagros Martinez, Paraprofessional; Emilia Stalker, Student Teacher; Karen Smith, Early Childhood Program Instructional Coach; Marion Kaes, School Librarian; Jeannie Cruz, Preschool teacher; Alexander Cruz, service hour volunteer; Brooke Graves, second-grade teacher; Michelle Butler, School Social Worker; Elvia Garcia, Dual-language Kindergarten teacher.

The event included Higgs and Estrada taking turns reading pages from the book Pete the Cat and his White Shoes in English and Spanish, as well as an excerpt from DogMan: Mothering Heights. Both teachers read with expression, used voices to bring the stories to life, and sang Pete’s catchy theme song!

The night was filled with engaging activities, including four station rotations for parents and students. Attendees had the opportunity to create a story wheel or comic strip to retell events, make stickered bookmarks to use at home, draw their favorite character murals, and go “swimming “for sight words and synonyms. There was something for everyone!

Other activities included Carmen Moorer from the Chicago Heights Public Library registering families for library cards, and raffles in which the following community partners donated prizes: Starbucks donated 10 coffee mugs and drink tumblers to be raffled to the parents; GPS Heating and Cooling donated Dogman books and stickers for students; Garfield Paraprofessional Milagros Martinez donated various Pete the Cat books; and the CHSD170 Parent Academy donated snacks and books to give away to families.

As the evening ended, families left Garfield with a surplus of books, stickers, character badges, bookmarks, coloring pages, reading suggestions, prizes, and snacks.

Alexis Osinaike, Starbucks store manager, echoed the sentiments of everyone who attended the event, saying,

“Thank you for including us in the event! We are so happy to help get families excited for reading night!”
