​ CHSD170’s Middle School Goes Pink to Combat Breast Cancer

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Chicago Heights Middle School's Girls' basketball teams hosted James Hart Middle School in a "Wear Pink" game on Wednesday, October 26th.

Fans, coaches, and players wore pink shirts and socks or pink ribbons to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the fight against the deadly disease.

"It was an awesome event as people wearing the color pink filled the stands," said CHMS Assistant Principal and CHSD170 Athletic Director Nick Pezzuto.

Among those displaying their support of the event were the CHMS sixth- through eighth-grade cheer squads, who wore pink ribbons and pink socks to signify the fight against breast cancer. The squads performed at halftime of each game to resounding applause from the appreciative audience.

"One of the most unexpected benefits of the game was seeing how affected our players were by the audience response," Pezzuto said. "They seemed to realize how important athletics can be in effecting change in how people perceive a cause."

Pezzuto thanked James Hart Athletic Director John Ugo for securing the participation of his fans, players, and coaches in the game. He also recognized the efforts of CHSD170's Gloria McFarlane, who organized the event's CHMS Pink Attire clothing component.

En honor al Mes de Concientización sobre el Cáncer de Mama, los equipos de baloncesto femenino de la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights recibieron a la Escuela Intermedia James Hart en un juego "Vístete de rosa" el miércoles 26 de octubre.

Los fanáticos, entrenadores y jugadores usaron camisetas y calcetines rosas o cintas rosas para mostrar su apoyo al Mes de Concientización sobre el Cáncer de Mama y la lucha contra la enfermedad mortal.

"Fue un evento increíble cuando la gente que vestía el color rosa llenaba las gradas", dijo el subdirector de CHMS y director atlético de CHSD170, Nick Pezzuto.

Entre los que mostraron su apoyo al evento se encontraban los equipos de porristas de sexto a octavo grado de CHMS, que usaron cintas rosas y calcetines rosas para representar la lucha contra el cáncer de mama. Las escuadras actuaron en el medio tiempo de cada juego con un sonoro aplauso de la audiencia agradecida.

"Uno de los beneficios más inesperados del juego fue ver cuán afectados estaban nuestros jugadores por la respuesta de la audiencia", dijo Pezzuto. "Parecieron darse cuenta de lo importante que puede ser el atletismo para efectuar un cambio en la forma en que las personas perciben una causa".

Pezzuto agradeció al director atlético de James Hart, John Ugo, por asegurar la participación de sus fanáticos, jugadores y entrenadores en el juego. También reconoció los esfuerzos de Gloria McFarlane de CHSD170, quien organizó el componente de ropa CHMS Pink Attire del evento.
