CHSD170’s Wilson School Celebrates Cinco de Mayo

CHSD170’s Wilson School celebrated Cinco de Mayo and Hispanic Culture throughout the month of May. The celebration was a testament to the active participation of students and staff, who decorated the school to inspire a festive environment and anticipation for the students.

With observing Cinco de Mayo as its focus, the school provided students with weekly opportunities to participate in cultural activities.

An essential component of the activity was that students performed in a Cinco de Mayo school-wide assembly showcasing Hispanic culture through dance, music, poetry, and song.

During instructional time, students researched the history of Cinco de Mayo and engaged in diverse learning activities, including creating traditional Mexican art, reading literature by Hispanic authors, learning and performing Hispanic music, and singing traditional Hispanic songs.

The school invited Urban Gateways, a Chicago-based performing arts company, to another in-school event featuring Hispanic artists Nelson and Paola Sosa, who presented Cha Cha Cha: Latin American Dance.

The interactive and engaging show, featuring instruments, music, and songs from South and Central America, was well received by students and staff. The Wilson family later participated in a fiesta-style environment, including dancing, playing instruments, and singing, and all had a fantastic time.

The extended Cinco de Mayo celebration concluded with students gathering in the Media Center to watch the movie “Encanto,” a film that beautifully portrays Hispanic culture and family life in the Colombian setting, providing a perfect ending to our celebration of diversity and unity.

Wilson Elementary School is proud to continue its unwavering commitment to engaging students in diverse and multicultural learning experiences.

“Our students had a wonderful time learning about Hispanic heritage and the history of Cinco de Mayo,” said Wilson School Principal Keyara Bishop.

“Throughout May, they explored the richness of Hispanic culture and celebrated the diversity within our school community.”

“It was truly heartening to see them expand their perspectives and gain a deeper appreciation for events that hold special meaning for their classmates,” she concluded.

Principal Bishop also extended sincere thanks to staff member Cardelia Horn for publicizing the event.

La Escuela Wilson del CHSD170 celebró el Cinco de Mayo y la cultura hispana durante todo el mes de mayo. La celebración fue un testimonio de la activa participación de estudiantes y personal, quienes decoraron la escuela para inspirar un ambiente festivo y generar expectación entre los estudiantes.

Con la celebración del Cinco de Mayo como tema central, la escuela ofreció a los estudiantes oportunidades semanales para participar en actividades culturales.

Un componente esencial de la actividad fue la participación de los estudiantes en una asamblea escolar conmemorativa del Cinco de Mayo, donde se mostró la cultura hispana a través de la danza, la música, la poesía y las canciones.

Posteriormente, la familia Wilson participó en un ambiente festivo, que incluyó baile, instrumentos y canto, y todos lo pasaron de maravilla.

La celebración extendida del Cinco de Mayo concluyó con los estudiantes reunidos en la Mediateca para ver la película "Encanto", una película que retrata maravillosamente la cultura hispana y la vida familiar en el contexto colombiano, ofreciendo un final perfecto para nuestra celebración de la diversidad y la unidad.

La Escuela Primaria Wilson se enorgullece de mantener su firme compromiso de involucrar a los estudiantes en experiencias de aprendizaje diversas y multiculturales.

“Nuestros estudiantes disfrutaron muchísimo aprendiendo sobre la herencia hispana y la historia del Cinco de Mayo”, dijo Keyara Bishop, directora de la Escuela Wilson.

“Durante mayo, exploraron la riqueza de la cultura hispana y celebraron la diversidad de nuestra comunidad escolar”.

“Fue realmente alentador verlos ampliar sus perspectivas y apreciar más profundamente los eventos que tienen un significado especial para sus compañeros”, concluyó.

La directora Bishop también agradeció sinceramente a Cardelia Horn, miembro del personal, por difundir el evento.
