CHSD170 Students Compete in a District-Wide Spelling Bee

Chicago Heights School District 170 recently conducted a Spelling Bee in the Auditorium of Washington-McKinley School.

The District Spelling Bee was a great success, and everyone appreciated the hard work of the students and team sponsors who participated. It was a day of remarkable achievements, with the students’ performances inspiring all in attendance.

The event marked the district’s first participation in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee competition, a renowned academic competition that tests students’ spelling and vocabulary skills. The students performed exceptionally well, showcasing the practice time and hard work they dedicated to giving their best effort at the Spelling Bee.

Sixteen students from third to eighth grade, along with eight alternates, represented the Chicago Heights Middle School, Garfield School, Greenbriar School, Grant School, Kennedy School, Roosevelt School, Washington-McKinley School, and Wilson School at the event.

Washington-McKinley School fifth-grader Larry Alvarez won the competition and will represent the district in the upcoming South Cook ISC Regional Qualifier on March 4 at Southland College Prep.

Other students who placed in the competition were second-place finisher Valentina McSwain, an eighth-grader from the Chicago Heights Middle School, and third-place finisher Roman Chavez, a fourth-grader from Roosevelt School.

CHSD170 staff who participated in the event praised the event and the student’s success.

“I enjoyed watching the students compete in an individually challenging and collectively competitive Spelling Bee Competition,” said Rodney Lumpkin, a CHMS teacher and Spelling Bee committee member.

“The District 170 Spelling Bee was a well-organized and engaging event showcasing the participants' talents and hard work. It was a joy to witness such dedication and skill on display,” added Ashlee Walk, a Washington-McKinley School Spelling Bee team sponsor.

“I am absolutely thrilled to see Larry Alvarez get the opportunity to compete in the South Cook Spelling Bee Competition,” noted Washington-McKinley Spelling Bee team sponsor Maricay Entsminger. “His dedication and hard work have paid off, and I have no doubt he will excel and continue to impress us all.”

Contributing to the Spelling Bee’s success were sweet treats donated by the new Starbucks in Chicago Heights. Their generous support added a special touch to the event, earning the gratitude of all in attendance.

“We appreciate Starbucks’ generous contribution in supporting the event and welcome them as members of the CHSD170 community partnership,” concluded Jennifer Gorton, the district’s Parent Academy Director.

El Distrito Escolar 170 de Chicago Heights realizó recientemente un Concurso de Ortografía en el Auditorio de la Escuela Washington-McKinley.El Concurso de Ortografía del Distrito fue un gran éxito, y todos apreciaron el arduo trabajo de los estudiantes y los patrocinadores del equipo que participaron. Larry Álvarez, estudiante de quinto grado de la Escuela Washington-McKinley, ganó la competencia y representará al distrito en el próximo Clasificatorio Regional de South Cook ISC el 4 de marzo en Southland College Prep.

Otros estudiantes que se clasificaron en la competencia fueron el segundo lugar Valentina McSwain, estudiante de octavo grado de la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights, y el tercer lugar Roman Chavez, estudiante de cuarto grado de la Escuela Roosevelt.
