​CHSD170 Students Go “Shopping With A Kappa”

On Saturday, December 2nd, the Chicago Heights Alumni Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity partnered with three CHSD170 schools to conduct the Fifth Annual “Shopping With a Kappa” event at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Olympia Fields.

One hundred fifty-seven students from Chicago Heights District 170’s Jefferson, Middle, and Wilson Schools participated in the event.

Each student shopped with a Kappa member and could select up to $100 worth of merchandise to celebrate the holidays.

Principals Chris Baikauskas (CHMS), Keyara Bishop (Wilson), and Caleb Valentin (Jefferson) joined in the activity, along with CHSD170 School Board President James Cordes and Board members Joanna Panici and Denise Manual. Illinois 2nd District State Representative Robin Kelly and Bloom Township Board Trustees Cheryl Franklin and Luciano Panici also attended the event.

“It has been my privilege to participate in this great event for years with the Kappa family, and I continue to be impressed with how they support our students every year,” Baikauskas said.

“It’s most gratifying to see how the families appreciate and how each student’s eyes light up for the event!”

CHMS Principal Baikauskas also acknowledged the efforts of SD170 staff members Kenyea Beach and Gloria McFarlane for their work as liaisons with the Kappa’s and our students’ families.

“I cannot commend Kenyea and Gloria enough for the amazing work they did in ensuring the success of this endeavor,” he said.

Wilson School Principal Bishop added her words of thanks regarding the event, saying, “I am grateful that Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. has partnered with us for the benefit of our students.”

“Seeing our students excitedly shopping was a joy. Some students selflessly bought things for their family members as well as themselves. The event was a great success, and we look forward to continuing this amazing partnership.”

Jefferson School Principal Valentin continued the words of praise for the event, saying, “Twenty-five families from our school participated in the event, and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive!”

“The parents greatly appreciated being selected and acknowledged the outstanding support this event provided for their families.”

“The children were tremendously excited about this opportunity that afforded additional support for our Jefferson School families during this time of the year and the upcoming holidays.”

“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to partner with such an organization that is engaged and involved with supporting our local community and helping to meet the needs of our families.”

“To Jefferson school parents and its students, the Kappa’s truly are our neighbors!” Valentin added.

Wilson School third-grade teacher Natalie Lewis concluded the unanimously positive reaction to the event: “My heart was full! What a blessing to witness all the smiles and appreciation seen in the faces of our students.”

Dr. Derwin A. Phillip, the Committee Chair for Shopping With A Kappa, detailed the event, saying, “We, the men of The Chicago Heights Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., were tremendously honored to serve so many children this past Saturday at our ’Shopping With A Kappa’ Event.”

“Every child received a $100 gift card at the Walmart Supercenter in Olympia Fields and walked around with a Kappa man shopping for whatever they wanted! The smiles, laughter, and joy the children and their families expressed were priceless! We look forward to serving more children next year!”

Cada estudiante compró con un miembro de Kappa y pudo seleccionar hasta $100 en mercancía para celebrar las fiestas.

La maestra de tercer grado de la Escuela Wilson, Natalie Lewis, concluyó la reacción unánimemente positiva al evento: “¡Mi corazón estaba lleno! Qué bendición ser testigo de todas las sonrisas y el aprecio que se ven en los rostros de nuestros estudiantes”.
