CHSD170's Garfield School Celebrates Family Reading Night

Chicago Heights School District 170's Garfield School celebrated Family Reading Night on Wednesday, May 10th.

The event, hosted in partnership with Jones Community Center, celebrated summer reading and highlighted the fun and hands-on learning opportunities available when families share a great book together.

The event began with a reading of the “Official Kick-off to Summer” picture book Enemy Pie, written by Derek Munson and illustrated by Tara Calahan King. The audience of Kindergarten through fifth-grade students and their families learned from the book a sweet lesson about how to turn a best enemy into a new best friend.

Continuing the book's theme, families participated in several hands-on learning extensions, including coloring one-of-a-kind friendship bracelets and creating Friendship Pie recipe cards. The event's highlight was the STEM learning session that saw families work together in designing and building a treehouse using only recyclable materials.

“This was a wonderful event where we shared reading, books, and activities with the parents of our students,” said Bilingual Interventionist and Jones After-School Program Coordinator Elvia Estrada.

“It was the first time our school worked in partnership with Jones Community Center, and we hope that that collaboration will continue on many more Family Reading Nights.”

“Family Reading Night was a great success,” added Garfield Principal Diane Kostovski. “It was wonderful to see the students and parents working together on activities and building incredible treehouses! I am very appreciative of our continued partnership with the Jones Center and their willingness to support this initiative.”

The staff of Garfield School echoed their Principal's praise of the evening.

“It was awesome to see the parents and students working together and sharing ideas.” Said first-grade teacher Brooke Graves. “It seemed the parents had just as much fun as the students when building the treehouses.”

“It was a well-organized event that saw families and students having a wonderful time making crafts and building friendship treehouses that went along with the story,” noted third-grade Dual Language teacher Alfredo Ferreira.

Kindergarten teacher Bard Hill added, “Throughout the evening, several families commented on how much they enjoyed spending one-on-one time with their child while connecting with other families from the Garfield School community.”

“I was asked by many parents and students if there will be more family nights next school year,” she concluded.

La Escuela Garfield del Distrito Escolar 170 de Chicago Heights celebró la Noche de Lectura Familiar el miércoles 10 de mayo.

El evento, organizado en asociación con el Centro Comunitario Jones, celebró la lectura de verano y destacó las oportunidades de aprendizaje divertidas y prácticas disponibles cuando las familias comparten un gran libro juntas.

El evento comenzó con una lectura del libro ilustrado "Lanzamiento oficial del verano", Enemy Pie, escrito por Derek Munson e ilustrado por Tara Calahan King. La audiencia de estudiantes de jardín de infantes a quinto grado y sus familias aprendieron del libro una dulce lección sobre cómo convertir a un mejor enemigo en un nuevo mejor amigo.

Continuando con el tema del libro, las familias participaron en varias extensiones de aprendizaje práctico, que incluyeron colorear pulseras de amistad únicas y crear tarjetas de recetas de Friendship Pie. El punto culminante del evento fue la sesión de aprendizaje de STEM en la que las familias trabajaron juntas en el diseño y la construcción de una casa en el árbol utilizando únicamente materiales reciclables.

“Este fue un evento maravilloso en el que compartimos lectura, libros y actividades con los padres de nuestros estudiantes”, dijo la intervencionista bilingüe y coordinadora del programa extraescolar de Jones, Elvia Estrada.

“Fue la primera vez que nuestra escuela trabajó en asociación con el Centro Comunitario Jones, y esperamos que esa colaboración continúe en muchas más Noches de Lectura Familiar”.

“La Noche de lectura familiar fue un gran éxito”, agregó la directora de Garfield, Diane Kostovski. “¡Fue maravilloso ver a los estudiantes y padres trabajando juntos en actividades y construyendo increíbles casas en los árboles! Estoy muy agradecido por nuestra asociación continua con el Centro Jones y su voluntad de apoyar esta iniciativa”.

El personal de la escuela Garfield se hizo eco de los elogios de la noche de su director.

“Fue increíble ver a los padres y estudiantes trabajando juntos y compartiendo ideas”. Dijo la maestra de primer grado Brooke Graves. “Parecía que los padres se divirtieron tanto como los estudiantes al construir las casas en los árboles”.

“Fue un evento bien organizado en el que las familias y los estudiantes se divirtieron mucho haciendo manualidades y construyendo casas en los árboles de la amistad que acompañaban la historia”, señaló Alfredo Ferreira, maestro de lenguaje dual de tercer grado.

El maestro de jardín de infantes Bard Hill agregó: “A lo largo de la noche, varias familias comentaron cuánto disfrutaron pasar tiempo a solas con sus hijos mientras se conectaban con otras familias de la comunidad de la escuela Garfield”.

“Muchos padres y estudiantes me preguntaron si habrá más noches familiares el próximo año escolar”, concluyó.
