CHSD170's Washington-McKinley School Hosts Family Reading Night

Chicago Heights School District 170’s Washington-McKinley School recently hosted a Dinosaur-themed Family Reading Night.

The evening of fun activities engaged all the participants while fostering a love for reading and learning. Students and their families took part in a dinosaur escape room, a challenging yet educational activity that required them to unscramble words, decipher codes, and solve riddles. These interactive games not only sparked an interest in dinosaurs but also enhanced their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

“The dinosaur escape room brought families together in a whirlwind of excitement and teamwork with students and their parents working together to solve a prehistoric puzzle!” said Reading Specialist Maricay Entsminger.

“The activity was a roaring success!”

Another highlight of the evening was a Reptile Presentation by Crosstown Exotics. This reptile and bug show, known for its engaging and informative presentations, travels throughout the Chicagoland area and provides students with a hands-on, entertaining learning experience. During the presentation, students had the opportunity to learn about the different species and their habitats and even handle some of the reptiles.

“The students were thrilled with the reptile show,” said ESL Teacher Kathy Haywood. “Their faces lit up with excitement, and you could feel the room buzzing with curiosity and amazement!”

At the end of the event, every student took home a new book provided by the district’s Parent Academy Director, Jennifer Gorton. These books, carefully selected to cater to different age groups and reading levels, aim to foster a love for reading and encourage students to continue their reading activities outside the school environment.

The Washington-McKinley Family Reading Night was made possible by the generous support of the National Council of Jewish Women, a testament to the strong community spirit and collaboration that is so important to the district’s success.

According to its website, the National Council of Jewish Women is a grassroots volunteer and advocacy organization that turns progressive ideas into action. The council strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.

Founded in 1893, the National Council of Jewish Women remains committed to its belief in education, advocacy, and community service. It continues to work in partnership and collaboration with other organizations, including local establishments, public schools, local government agencies, human service providers, faith-based institutions, other non-profits, and elected officials holding positions in many offices.

La Escuela Washington-McKinley del Distrito Escolar 170 de Chicago Heights organizó recientemente una Noche de Lectura Familiar con temática de dinosaurios.

La noche de actividades divertidas involucró a todos los participantes al tiempo que fomentó el amor por la lectura y el aprendizaje. Los estudiantes y sus familias participaron en una sala de escape de dinosaurios, una actividad desafiante pero educativa que requirió que descifraran palabras, descifraran códigos y resolvieran acertijos. Otro punto culminante de la noche fue una presentación de reptiles por Crosstown Exotics. Este espectáculo de reptiles e insectos, conocido por sus presentaciones atractivas e informativas, viaja por toda el área de Chicago y brinda a los estudiantes una experiencia de aprendizaje práctica y entretenida. Durante la presentación, los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de aprender sobre las diferentes especies y sus hábitats e incluso manejar algunos de los reptiles.

"Los estudiantes estaban encantados con el espectáculo de reptiles", dijo Kathy Haywood, maestra de ESL. "Sus rostros se iluminaron de emoción, ¡y podías sentir la habitación zumbando de curiosidad y asombro!"

Al final del evento, cada estudiante se llevó a casa un nuevo libro proporcionado por la Directora de la Academia de Padres del distrito, Jennifer Gorton. Estos libros, cuidadosamente seleccionados para atender a diferentes grupos de edad y niveles de lectura, tienen como objetivo fomentar el amor por la lectura y alentar a los estudiantes a continuar sus actividades de lectura fuera del entorno escolar.

La Noche de Lectura Familiar Washington-McKinley fue posible gracias al generoso apoyo del Consejo Nacional de Mujeres Judías, un testimonio del fuerte espíritu comunitario y la colaboración que es tan importante para el éxito del distrito.
