Football: Bloom Township Rushes Past Amundsen for First Win

Bloom Township 47, Amundsen 7: Led by LaVante Blackful, the Blazing Trojans click on all cylinders and bounce back from last week's tough loss.

Breaking It Down: Coming off last week’s tough 30-28 loss to Glenbard South, got down to business early and rolled to a 47-7 win over Amundsen on Saturday in Chicago Heights.

The Blazing Trojans scored 13 points in the first quarter on two touchdown runs—the first by Kevin McGinnis from 5 yards out and the second by quarterback LaVante Blackful from 12 yards out. Bloom tacked on 20 more points in the second quarter to take a commanding 33-0 halftime lead. The Blazing Trojans scored three touchdowns in the quarter, as Charles DeLoach scored from 5 yards out, Blackful made an impressive 54-yard TD run, and Blackful hooked up with Jason Mendez for a 31-yard touchdown pass with three minutes left in the first half. The Blazing Trojans completely dominated the first-half stats, as they rolled up 287 total yards (184 rushing, 103 passing), while the Vikings managed just 47 total yards and one first down.  

The onslaught continued in the second half, as Bloom’s Randal Wade scored from 10 yards out at the 7:03 mark of the third quarter and then picked up a Viking fumble for a touchdown on the next possession to give the Blazing Trojans a 47-0 lead. The rest of the game was played under a running clock, and the Blazing Trojans enjoyed their first win of the season.

Patch’s MVP: LaVonte Blackful, Bloom Township. Blackful carried his great play from last week into this week, rushing the ball 14 teams for 131 yards and two touchdowns while completing 6 of 8 passes for 103-yards and a touchdown, all in roughly three quarters of work.

Bloom Township Stat Pack: Kevin McGinnis rushed the ball 11 times for 55 yards and a touchdown. Charles DeLoach rushed the ball twice for seven yards and a touchdown. Shijuan Rogers had three catches for 40 yards.

Amundsen Stat Pack: The Vikings had 47 total first-half yards and just one first down.

Team Records: Bloom Township improved to 1-2 on the season, while Amundsen dropped to 1-2.

What’s Next: Bloom Township will host Rich Central for homecoming next Saturday at Sarff Field, starting at noon. Amundsen will play Morgan Park next Saturday at Gately Stadium at 3 p.m.
