Franciscan Health receives Intellijoint Surgical Innovation Award
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Payne and Olympia Fields hospital recognized for adoption of breakthrough hip replacement technology

Franciscan Heath Olympia Fields and William Payne, MD, a board certified orthopedic surgeon, were jointly awarded the Intellijoint Surgical Innovation Trailblazer Award of Excellence at a reception on July 11, at the Olympia Fields Hospital.
Dr. Payne and Franciscan Health received this award to acknowledge their adoption of intellijoint HIP® - a highly accurate 3D mini-optical navigation system that assists in size selection and positioning of artificial implants during hip replacement surgery.
“By providing intraoperative implant measurements to assist in accurately positioning hip implants, intellijoint HIPhas allowed a reduction in the number of radiographs I would normally take during a direct anterior hip replacement,” said Dr. Payne said. “Reduced exposure to fluoroscopy during a procedure is better for everyone in the operating, including the patient, as well as the entire surgical team.”

A total hip replacement is a generally successful surgery that can reduce hip pain and restore mobility but, as with many procedures, there are risks. These risks can include leg length discrepancy, dislocation, joint instability, reduced muscle strength, reduced hip range of motion, and long-term pain.
The intellijoint HIPtechnology addresses these risks by providing accurate, intraoperative measurements for cup position, leg length, and offset to assist the surgeon in placing implants in a location that best matches the patient’s native anatomy.
