Jefferson School Reaches Students by Channeling the Brady Bunch

The CHSD170 school replicated the program's famed theme song to describe how much they miss their students and remain a family

A group of teachers at Chicago Heights School District 170’s Jefferson School recently pooled their talents to create a “feel good” video especially for their students.

The video mimicked the iconic theme song from the popular television program, ‘The Brady Bunch,’ and sent students a message of hope and inspiration during the period of E-Learning and social distancing necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Music teacher James Rahtjen conceived the idea for the video and shared his vision with fellow teacher Alan Downs. They brought their plan to Jefferson Principal Chris Baikauskas, who wholeheartedly endorsed the undertaking.

“I loved the idea and readily approved the project,” Baikauskas said.

“Since the COVID-19 E-Learning and social distancing processes began in mid-March, our staff truly have missed being with the students in school.”

“In every teleconferenced staff meeting since the remote learning process began, we spent a great deal of time talking about our students.”

“From those conversations, Jim got the idea of creating a video that would use music to show our students just how much we miss them and think about them.”

“I truly believe,” Baikauskas added, “that the video not only represents the attitude of the Jefferson School family but reflects the attitudes of all of the schools in our district.”

Rahtjen explained that twenty people took part in creating the collaborative E-Learning event.

“They sent vocal recordings, video, and photos used in the project,” he said, “but most of all, they sent heart!”

“I sincerely believe that this creative effort by the staff of our school will be a real encouragement to our students because it shows how much they are loved and missed,” he added.

Downs, who collaborated with Rahtjen to write the lyric of the parody, explained that using the Brady Bunch theme conveyed the idea that students and staff are very much like a family.

“We wanted everyone to know that the forced social distancing had created an atmosphere in which the teachers and staff felt lost without their students,” he said.

“By putting this message out through video and music, we hoped that anyone who watched would feel a little less isolated and know that even though separated by distance, we still are connected.”

CHSD170 Superintendent Tom Amadio was quick to share his approval of the video and the talents and the commitment of the staff who created the piece.

“During this most tumultuous time, the staff of Jefferson School came together to create an inspiring and heartening video message that shared our district-wide feeling of dismay at being separated from our students,” Amadio said.

“With humor and empathy, the Jefferson family reminded us that we must all face this unique and historic experience together while believing that a return to normalcy remains just around the corner.”
