Latina Judges Visit CHMS in Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month

A pair of judges from the Circuit Court of Cook County recently visited the Chicago Heights Middle School (CHMS) to address a student assembly as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.

CHMS Principal Christopher Baikauskas and SD170 Social-Emotional Learning Coordinator Kenyea Beach coordinated the appearance of judges Araceli De La Cruz and Lisette Catherine Mojica with the assistance of Illinois 1st District Appellate Judge Jesse Reyes.

De La Cruz and Mojica spoke to the students about their humble beginnings, how being Latina helps them in their careers today, and how leadership skills make them successful in the courtroom before entertaining questions from the students.

“It was a great honor to speak with the students at the Chicago Heights Middle School,” De La Cruz said.

“It was truly my pleasure to share my experiences and story with such a wonderful audience, and their enthusiasm and questions inspired me.”

“It is always a joy to see the great potential of our youth, and I am sure there are a number of future attorneys and judges among them!” she concluded.

Baikauskas noted that events of this nature have become an essential part of the CHMS educational dynamic.

“This event was one in a series of presentations our school offers our students as a way of imparting the importance of education, character, and diversity in bringing our community, our nation, and our world together,” he said.

Beach expanded upon Baikauskas’ words when describing the event.

“CHMS wants students to see themselves as soon to be contributing members of society who will be successful and essential members of our society.”

“The honorable Judges Reyes, De La Cruz, and Mojica are great leaders who embody those traits by overcoming personal adversities and challenges with perseverance and consistency to be successful within the justice system.”

“Our students’ were able to hear the judges’ personal perspectives of what was needed for them to excel in their profession. This dialogue was informative, emotional, and motivating, and we appreciate the judge’s time and consideration for the students at CHMS,” Beach noted.

Un par de jueces del Tribunal de Circuito del Condado de Cook visitaron recientemente la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights (CHMS) para dirigirse a una asamblea estudiantil como parte del Mes de la Herencia Hispana.

El director de CHMS, Christopher Baikauskas, y la coordinadora de aprendizaje socioemocional de SD170, Kenyea Beach, coordinaron la comparecencia de las juezas Araceli De La Cruz y Lisette Catherine Mojica con la asistencia del juez de apelaciones del primer distrito de Illinois, Jesse Reyes.

De La Cruz y Mojica hablaron con los estudiantes sobre sus humildes comienzos, cómo ser latina les ayuda en sus carreras hoy y cómo las habilidades de liderazgo las hacen exitosas en la sala del tribunal antes de entretener las preguntas de los estudiantes.

“Fue un gran honor hablar con los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria Chicago Heights”, dijo De La Cruz.

“Fue realmente un placer compartir mis experiencias y mi historia con una audiencia tan maravillosa, y su entusiasmo y preguntas me inspiraron”.

“¡Siempre es un placer ver el gran potencial de nuestra juventud y estoy seguro de que entre ellos habrá muchos futuros abogados y jueces!” ella concluyó.

Baikauskas señaló que eventos de esta naturaleza se han convertido en una parte esencial de la dinámica educativa del CHMS.

“Este evento fue uno de una serie de presentaciones que nuestra escuela ofrece a nuestros estudiantes como una forma de transmitir la importancia de la educación, el carácter y la diversidad para unir a nuestra comunidad, nuestra nación y nuestro mundo”, el dijo.

Beach amplió las palabras de Baikauskas al describir el evento.

“CHMS quiere que los estudiantes se vean a sí mismos como miembros contribuyentes de la sociedad que serán miembros exitosos y esenciales de nuestra sociedad”.

“Los honorables jueces Reyes, De La Cruz y Mojica son grandes líderes que encarnan esos rasgos al superar adversidades y desafíos personales con perseverancia y consistencia para tener éxito dentro del sistema de justicia”.

“Nuestros estudiantes pudieron escuchar las perspectivas personales de los jueces sobre lo que necesitaban para sobresalir en su profesión. Este diálogo fue informativo, emotivo y motivador, y apreciamos el tiempo y la consideración del juez hacia los estudiantes de CHMS”, señaló Beach.
