MCHS Students Spread Warmth, Kindness in SD170 Dual Language Classroom

Students from the LatinX organization at Marian Catholic High School recently visited CHSD170’d Washington-McKinley School and brought warmth and generosity to dual-language classrooms. They delivered coats and engaged in kindness-themed learning activities with students from Washington-McKinley School. This heartwarming initiative aimed to foster a culture of compassion and community service.

The event saw high school volunteers providing winter coats for students, ensuring they stay warm during the cold season. In addition to the coat giveaway, the high schoolers participated in interactive kindness activities designed to teach empathy, inclusivity, and the importance of helping others.

“The joy on the students’ faces as they received their coats and engaged in these activities was truly touching,” said Washington-McKinley Principal Joe Silvestri.

“It’s inspiring to see young people take an active role in making a difference in their community.”

Señora Dominguez, LatinX sponsor, and Marian Catholic teacher, added, “In my past two years as club moderator for Marian Catholic’s Hispanic Student Coalition, I have watched our students continuously take on a variety of roles and responsibilities that demonstrate their dedication to their faith, culture, and tradition.”

“Our club is founded on the idea of providing our student members with a space to belong at Marian. Conversely, they, too, want to ensure that the next generation of youth has a place to belong that affords them opportunities to succeed in their personal and educational pursuits.”

“This year, our students wanted to take on a community service project here in the Chicago Heights community, and Washington-McKinley School provided us the opportunity to do that by hosting a Winter Coat Drive.”

The activity was spearheaded by LatinX student officers Vanessa Soto and Marisela Soto, who have ties to the elementary school. The MCHS students collected, mended, packed, and delivered the items to the elementary school students. They also had the chance to read and interact with many of the bilingual classrooms for the day. They also assisted the bilingual classroom teachers with an activity based on the theme of kindness.

The day ended with the distribution of recycled, heart-shaped crayons that the MCHS students packed and prepared for the Washington McKinley students. The crayons had the message “MCHS-Hispanic Student Coalition—made with love” handwritten on them.

“I am beyond proud of our students who continuously and tirelessly show up, who are making a difference, and who have a strong impact on our school community and beyond,” Dominguez added.

Marian Catholic students also took the opportunity to mentor and encourage their younger peers, sharing personal stories about kindness and discussing ways to spread positivity in their daily lives. Activities included high schoolers reading a book, doing a writing activity, and a craft to reinforce themes of kindness and empathy.

Hispanic Student Coalition’s Co-President Vanessa Soto added, “As a club, one of our biggest goals is to give back to our community, and we are so grateful for the opportunity that Washington McKinley gave us to do just that through our Winter coat drive!”

“Our hearts were warmed after spending time with the amazing bilingual students, and we will never forget this experience.”

The initiative reminds us of the power of kindness and community. Marian Catholic High School hopes to continue fostering such opportunities for students to engage in service and make a lasting impact on those around them.

La actividad fue encabezada por las oficiales estudiantiles latinas Vanessa Soto y Marisela Soto, quienes tienen vínculos con la escuela primaria.
