SD170’s English Language Learning Dept. Celebrates Hispanic Cultures
El Departamento de Aprendizaje del Idioma Inglés de CHSD170 celebra las culturas hispanas
The English Language Learning Department of Chicago Heights School District 170 recently held two events celebrating our students’ Hispanic cultures.
On May 17, 2023, at Chicago Heights Middle School, the district’s Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC) held its annual Hispanic Heritage Night.
The evening was highlighted by dances, poems, and songs performed by students in the Dual Language program. Eighth-grade bilingual students, Maria Boscan and Darwin Navarrete emceed the event.

Students from Mrs. Segovia’s 8th grade Spanish Language Arts class introduced the cultural dances by reading a short piece on each country represented: Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras, and Puerto Rico.
In addition to the performances, community partners from the Chicago Heights Park District, Chicago Heights Library, Aunt Martha’s, Respond Now, Bloom Township Community Center, State Rep. Anthony DeLuca, The Breanaland Project, and Prairie State Latino Club provided helpful resources and information to support health, wellness, education, and summer activities to those in attendance.

On May 24, the BPAC held a family literacy night at Washington-McKinley School.
During the event, Ms. Guera, a Dual Language paraprofessional at Roosevelt School, engaged families in a read-aloud of the book, “Paleta Man,” while enjoying paletas (popsicles).
The families also played Loteria (Hispanic Bingo) and selected Spanish language books to take home for summer reading.
The event ended with each student receiving a summer fun bag filled with reading resources, the Chicago Heights library events newsletter, and sunglasses.
“We were thrilled to welcome our students and their families to our celebrations of Hispanic heritage,” said Shannon Vera, CHSD170’s Director of English Language Learning.
“Our district's Dual Language Program's mission is to teach students about their heritage and celebrate who they are. One way to celebrate the wonderful Hispanic culture is by displaying their traditions and customs. In doing so, we trust everyone enjoyed our events celebrating those cultures through poetry, music, and dance!”

El Departamento de Aprendizaje del Idioma Inglés del Distrito Escolar 170 de Chicago Heights realizó recientemente dos eventos para celebrar las culturas hispanas de nuestros estudiantes.
El 17 de mayo de 2023, en la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights, el Comité Asesor de Padres Bilingües (BPAC, por sus siglas en inglés) del distrito celebró su Noche de la Herencia Hispana anual.
La velada se destacó por bailes, poemas y canciones interpretados por estudiantes en el programa de Lenguaje Dual. Los estudiantes bilingües de octavo grado, María Boscán y Darwin Navarrete, presentan el evento.
Los estudiantes de la clase de artes del lenguaje español de octavo grado de la Sra. Segovia introdujeron los bailes culturales leyendo un breve artículo sobre cada país representado: México, Colombia, Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras y Puerto Rico.
Además de las actuaciones, los socios comunitarios del distrito de parques de Chicago Heights, la biblioteca de Chicago Heights, Aunt Martha's, Respond Now, Bloom Township Community Center, el representante estatal Anthony DeLuca, The Breanaland Project y Prairie State Latino Club brindaron recursos e información útiles. para apoyar la salud, el bienestar, la educación y las actividades de verano para los asistentes.
El 24 de mayo, BPAC llevó a cabo una noche familiar de alfabetización en la Escuela Washington-McKinley.
Durante el evento, la Sra. Guera, paraprofesional de lenguaje dual en la Escuela Roosevelt, invitó a las familias a leer en voz alta el libro “Paleta Man”, mientras disfrutaban paletas.
Las familias también jugaron Loteria (Bingo Hispano) y seleccionaron libros en español para llevar a casa para leer durante el verano.
El evento terminó con cada estudiante recibiendo una bolsa divertida de verano llena de recursos de lectura, el boletín informativo de eventos de la biblioteca de Chicago Heights y anteojos de sol.
“Nos emocionó dar la bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes y sus familias a nuestras celebraciones de la herencia hispana”, dijo Shannon Vera, directora de aprendizaje del idioma inglés de CHSD170.
“La misión del Programa de Lenguaje Dual de nuestro distrito es enseñar a los estudiantes sobre su herencia y celebrar quiénes son. Una forma de celebrar la maravillosa cultura hispana es mostrando sus tradiciones y costumbres. Al hacerlo, confiamos en que todos disfrutaron de nuestros eventos celebrando esas culturas a través de la poesía, la música y la danza”.
