SD170’s Roosevelt School Las Amigas Girls Club "Gifts from the Heart"

Twenty-five grade four- and grade five- students from the Las Amigas Girls Club of CHSD170’s Roosevelt School participated in a Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) Beta Beta Chapter Gifts from the Heart event on Saturday, December 9th, at the Chicago Heights Middle School.

The DKG Beta Beta Chapter has partnered with local social service agencies for over 20 years to provide Gifts from the Heart, a project designed to help children focus on the spirit of giving during the holiday season.

At the event, DKG International Beta Beta Chapter members assisted students in making and wrapping holiday gifts. The DKG Chapter provided all of the materials for students to create, wrap, and label 10-15 craft gifts to give to their families and friends. For their commitment to the project, the students earned the opportunity to select books to enjoy at home.

Dr. Gretchen Sutherland, CHSD170’s Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, is the DKG-Beta Beta Recording Secretary.

“I became a member of the organization in 2017 and began participating in events of this type. I was amazed at the army of women who prepared and organized the crafts and events. My heart was filled by the enjoyment the children experienced as they learned from active and retired educators how to make various gifts and crafts,” Sutherland said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted the Gifts from the Heart program, but this fall, the Gifts from the Heart Committee members asked Sutherland to reach out to one District 170 schools to participate this year in hopes that we can begin an annual partnership to provide this activity.”

“I believe volunteerism supporting students and the community is vital to being an educator, and the DKG-Beta Beta’s provide that opportunity. The chapter also provides scholarships to aspiring educators and supports teachers and administrators in various ways.”

“I believe this particular event is important because it allows students to experience the joy of giving to those they love.”

“I want to thank the CHSD 170 school board and district administration, as well as the administration and staff at both Roosevelt School and the CHMS, for making this event possible.”

“I would also like to thank Dr. Maricela Clark. SD170’s Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Jill Raymond, Assistant Superintendent of Special Services, and the approximately 30 DKG-Beta Beta members whose volunteer efforts made this a memorable day for our students!” Sutherland concluded.

The mission statement of the “Las Amigas” 4th- and 5th- grade Girls Club includes:

Empowerment - To empower girls by fostering self-confidence, self-expression, leadership skills, and a strong sense of worth;

Education - To provide educational and engaging activities that promote learning, creativity and personal growth;

Goals - To provide a diverse range of activities and learning experiences to include arts and crafts and creative projects to boost imagination and self-expression; and

Friendship and support - Creating a supportive network of friends and mentors.

“The Las Amigas Girls Club has 32 members and provides a safe, supportive, and empowering space for our students to learn, grow, and have fun together,” said Yvette Arnold, who sponsors the club along with Elizabeth Reyes.

“As members of our Las Amigas Girls Club, our students are building lasting friendships in a supportive environment!” Reyes added.

Delta Kappa Gamma DKG International - Local Chapter Beta Beta is a service organization dedicated to elevating and supporting female educators, aspiring teachers, and student literacy throughout the Chicago Southland community through volunteerism and scholarship.

Veinticinco estudiantes de cuarto y quinto grado del Club de Niñas Las Amigas de la Escuela Roosevelt de CHSD170 participaron en un evento de Regalos del Corazón del Capítulo Beta Beta de Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) el sábado 9 de diciembre en la Escuela Secundaria Chicago Heights.

El Capítulo Beta de DKG Beta se ha asociado con agencias de servicios sociales locales durante más de 20 años para ofrecer Gifts from the Heart, un proyecto diseñado para ayudar a los niños a concentrarse en el espíritu de dar durante la temporada navideña.

En el evento, los miembros del Capítulo Beta Internacional de DKG ayudaron a los estudiantes a hacer y envolver regalos navideños. El Capítulo DKG proporcionó todos los materiales para que los estudiantes crearan, envolvieran y etiquetaran entre 10 y 15 obsequios artesanales para regalar a sus familiares y amigos. Por su compromiso con el proyecto, los estudiantes se ganaron la oportunidad de seleccionar libros para disfrutar en casa.

“Me hice miembro de la organización en 2017 y comencé a participar en eventos de este tipo. Me sorprendió el ejército de mujeres que preparaban y organizaban las artesanías y los eventos. “La pandemia de COVID-19 detuvo temporalmente el programa Gifts from the Heart, pero este otoño, los miembros del Comité Gifts from the Heart le pidieron a Sutherland que se comunicara con una de las escuelas del Distrito 170 para participar este año con la esperanza de que podamos comenzar una asociación anual para proporcionar esta actividad”.

La misión del Club de Niñas de 4to y 5to grado “Las Amigas” incluye:

Empoderamiento: Empoderar a las niñas fomentando la confianza en sí mismas, la autoexpresión, las habilidades de liderazgo y un fuerte sentido de valor;

Delta Kappa Gamma DKG International - Capítulo local Beta Beta es una organización de servicios dedicada a elevar y apoyar a educadoras, aspirantes a maestras y estudiantes de alfabetización en toda la comunidad de Chicago Southland a través del voluntariado y becas.
