SD170 Students Shine in a Return to District-wide Spelling Competition

Eighty-five students representing grades two through eight from CHSD170’s Garfield, Grant, Greenbriar, Kennedy, Roosevelt, Washington-McKinley, and Wilson Schools, along with a trio of teams from the Chicago Heights Middle School, eagerly participated in the district’s highly anticipated Spelling competitions on May 7th, 8th, and 9th, in the Auditorium of Washington-McKinley School.

The competition, SD170's first since 2019, was not just a competition, but a significant milestone, marking the revival of a long-standing tradition of spelling competitions, a tradition that has always been a source of pride for the SD170 community.

The winning teams, their participants, and sponsors were:

Second and Third Grade: Washington-McKinley School; Dominque Cisneros, Javiana Infante, David Maldonado, Jaden Mendoza, and Heaven Pole. Team sponsor: Maricay Entsminger;

Fourth and Fifth Grade: Greenbriar School; Nauyeli Chavez, Madison Hunt, Yahel Nunez, Juliette Sanchez, and Andrew Sweetin. Team sponsor: Anne Contreras;

Seventh Grade: CHMS; Daniel Buckley, Darius Cristwell, Lisandra Leija, Erick Sinay-Lutin, and Chace Smith. Team Sponsor: Elizabeth Perez.

“I am so proud of our second and third-grade Washington-McKinley Spelling Bee Team!” Entsminger said. “This is such an amazing, bright, and fun group of students! This competition showcased their incredible spelling ability and a testament to their hard work and determination!”

“It was an honor to be their Spelling Bee Coach, and all of us thank the Spelling Bee Committee for the amazing job in creating an educational and fun event,” she concluded.

Coach Perez added, “I am proud of the seventh-grade team. They have been studying since February, giving up their lunch every day to prepare for this, and as a reward for their hard work, they were able to enjoy Wingstop.”

“Their commitment and dedication allowed them to spell their way towards victory, proving that every letter counts.”

Coach Contreras also added her thoughts, saying, "Our fourth and fifth-grade Spelling Bee team put in the hours studying together during their lunches and recess times, as well as working around their soccer and baseball schedules at home. I am so incredibly proud of how well they encouraged one another and the other teams.”

“The strategies they shared and the challenging words they worked through together paid off. As a first-time coach, it was a thrill for me to see them 'buzzing' with excitement before, during, and after the competition.”

Spelling Bee Committee member Rodney Lumpkins also praised the activity, saying, “I enjoyed watching the students compete and hold each other accountable in an individually challenging and collectively competitive Spelling Bee Competition.”

Committee member Cristina Soto agreed, saying, “It was great to see the excitement among students competing in the Spelling Bee! It was also exciting to see the community engagement as parents were thrilled to come out and show their support!”

Dr. Gretchen Sutherland, CHSD170’s Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, praised everyone who contributed to making the Spelling competitions a resounding success, citing specific achievements such as the number of participants, high scores, and overall improvement in spelling skills.

“Seeing the hard work effected by so many students and staff filled me with immense pride at being part of the School District 170 family, she said.

“The commitment to affording our students with the highest quality educational experience, including supporting activities like Spelling competitions, remains our school district’s paramount goal."

“We applaud their success, and sincerely hope to continue and expand the Spelling competitions so our students can continue their educational journey in conference and regional Spelling competitions next year and for many years to come.”

It was exciting to bring back the Spelling Bee and to engage students and their families in fun spirited collegial competition, and I cannot thank the committee enough for what they did to make this a highly organized and successful experience for all involved,” Sutherland concluded.

The Spelling Bee Committee members also expressed their sincere thanks to Nick Pezzuto and Amy Hein for their help with t-shirts, transportation, team photos, and day-of-competition events.

Ochenta y cinco estudiantes que representan a los grados segundo a octavo de las escuelas Garfield, Grant, Greenbriar, Kennedy, Roosevelt, Washington-McKinley y Wilson de CHSD170, junto con un trío de equipos de la Escuela Intermedia Chicago Heights, participaron con entusiasmo en las muy esperadas competencias de ortografía del distrito los días 7, 8 y 9 de mayo, en el Auditorio de la Escuela Washington-McKinley.

"¡Estoy muy orgullosa de nuestro equipo de deletreo Washington-McKinley de segundo y tercer grado!" Dijo Entsminger. "¡Este es un grupo de estudiantes increíble, brillante y divertido! ¡Esta competencia mostró su increíble habilidad ortográfica y un testimonio de su arduo trabajo y determinación!"

"Fue un honor ser su entrenadora de Spelling Bee, y todos agradecemos al Comité de Spelling Bee por el increíble trabajo de crear un evento educativo y divertido", concluyó.

El entrenador Pérez agregó: "Estoy orgulloso del equipo de séptimo grado. Han estado estudiando desde febrero, renunciando a su almuerzo todos los días para prepararse para esto, y como recompensa por su arduo trabajo, pudieron disfrutar de Wingstop".

"Su compromiso y dedicación les permitieron deletrear su camino hacia la victoria, demostrando que cada letra cuenta".

La entrenadora Contreras también agregó sus pensamientos, diciendo: "Nuestro equipo de Spelling Bee de cuarto y quinto grado dedica horas a estudiar juntos durante sus almuerzos y recreos, además de trabajar en sus horarios de fútbol y béisbol en casa. Estoy increíblemente orgulloso de lo bien que se animaron unos a otros y a los otros equipos".

"Las estrategias que compartieron y las palabras desafiantes en las que trabajaron juntos dieron sus frutos. Como entrenador primerizo, fue emocionante para mí verlos 'zumbar' de emoción antes, durante y después de la competencia".

Rodney Lumpkins, miembro del Comité de Deletreo, también elogió la actividad y dijo: "Disfruté viendo a los estudiantes competir y responsabilizarse unos a otros en una competencia de Spelling Bee individualmente desafiante y colectivamente competitiva".

Cristina Soto, miembro del Comité del Concurso de Ortografía, estuvo de acuerdo y dijo: "¡Fue genial ver la emoción entre los estudiantes que compiten en el Concurso de Ortografía! También fue emocionante ver la participación de la comunidad, ya que los padres estaban encantados de salir y mostrar su apoyo".

La Dra. Gretchen Sutherland, Superintendente Adjunta de Enseñanza y Aprendizaje de CHSD170, elogió a todos los que contribuyeron a que los concursos de ortografía fueran un éxito rotundo.

"Ver el arduo trabajo realizado por tantos estudiantes y personal me llenó de inmenso orgullo de ser parte de la familia del Distrito Escolar 170", dijo.

"El compromiso de brindar a nuestros estudiantes una experiencia educativa de la más alta calidad, incluyendo actividades de apoyo como competencias de ortografía, sigue siendo el objetivo primordial de nuestro distrito escolar. Esperamos sinceramente continuar y expandir las competencias de ortografía para que nuestros estudiantes puedan continuar su viaje educativo en las conferencias y competencias regionales de ortografía el próximo año y durante muchos años más".

Fue emocionante traer de vuelta el Concurso de Ortografía e involucrar a los estudiantes y sus familias en una competencia colegial divertida y animada, y no puedo agradecer lo suficiente al comité por lo que hicieron para hacer de esta una experiencia altamente organizada y exitosa para todos los involucrados", concluyó Sutherland.

Los miembros del Comité del Concurso de Ortografía también agradecieron a Nick Pezzuto y Amy Hein por toda su ayuda adicional con camisetas, transporte, fotos del equipo y eventos del día de la competencia.
