SD170's 8th-grade Girls Are the IESA Regional Volleyball Champs

The program continues its stellar record by earning the title in a straight-set win over Columbia Central

CHSD170's 8th-Grade Girls Volleyball Team lived up to its top-seed by marching to victory in the IESA Regional Volleyball Tournament held recently at Coolidge Middle School in Phoenix.

The squad, under Head Coach Allison Fansher and Assistant Coach Angela Gliottoni, defeated Columbia Central of Steger in straight sets, 25-17, and 25-23 to earn the title.

The team ended the campaign with a season record of 15-4.

"I am delighted with the season-long performance of our team," said Fansher, "and am especially proud of the special and unique qualities that each of the girls brought to the table."

"This squad is made up of some of the hardest working girls I have had the pleasure to work with and coach" she continued.

"The amount of growth and talent they have shown in such a short time is no coincidence. The girls' combination of drive and determination is something deserving of recognition."

Members of the championship team were America Antunes (Roosevelt), Adriana Barbosa (Greenbriar), Nevaeh Carbajal (Greenbriar), Noraly Marin (Roosevelt), Charlene Mendoza (Greenbriar), Esmeralda Mendoza (Greenbriar), Angelica Rangel (STEM), Dally Santiago (Greenbriar), and Alyssa Velazquez (STEM).

CHSD170 Athletic Director Joe Barker also recognized the team, its coaches, and its accomplishments, saying,

"The commitment from everyone involved in making the team the very best that it could be was deservedly rewarded with a regional championship, and School District 170 is proud of their outstanding effort."
