SD170's CHMS Students Join in the City-Wide Clean-Up

A group of students from Chicago Heights School District 170's Middle School joined with others to participate in the recent City-Wide Clean-Up hosted by 2nd-Ward Alderman Sonia Perez and CHMS 7th- Grade Science Teacher and 2nd-Ward Park District Commissioner Elizabeth Perez.

The City-Wide Clean-Up is an annual event hosted by the City of Chicago Heights to maintain and keep the city beautiful. As part of the process, residents were welcomed to drop off large items and yard waste.

For the past seven years (except for 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic caused the event's cancelation), the Second Ward has welcomed student volunteers from School District 170 and School District 206 to help clean up neighborhoods. This year, students from the Chicago Heights Middle School collected more than fifteen bags of garbage over the seven-block area, a substantial increase in litter over previous years.

"The students and I spent more than three hours cleaning up an area of East End Avenue to Main Street to 26th Street and on 26th Street from East End Ave to Wallace Avenue," Perez said.

During the event, the students frequently mentioned that, even though they were working, they enjoyed doing something with their friends that extended beyond their usual routine. Almost to a person, the students said they relished the activity, embraced the experience, and expressed interest in returning next year to join in the clean-up.

"My experience in helping out on Saturday was great! Cleaning up garbage for the community was something I wanted to do since it was added to my' bucket list' for summer," said Linda Joseph, a seventh-grade student at the CHMS.

"This was one of the best experiences of my life, and the most fun part was when my classmates and I encountered a snake while sorting through the trash! I want to thank Ms. Perez for allowing me a true-life experience while having fun with my friends."

Jaeden Martinez, another CHMS seventh-grader, reaffirmed his classmate's positive sentiments saying, "I thought the day was going to be boring, but it was a lot of fun and, hey, at the end of the day, they gave us good food!"

Other students who participated in the event were seventh-graders Johntae Britton, and Gustavo Guttierez-Garcia, along with high-schoolers Iris Adalpe and Marrisa Newcombe.

In addition to Perez, staff and helpers who participated in the clean-up were Omero Garcia (CHMS Porter/Custodian), Roman Martinez (Owner, ACG Cutz), Rhondine Myers (CHMS 7th-grade Social Studies teacher), Roy Perez (CHMS Custodian), Sonia Perez (2nd-Ward Alderman), Jessie Tanis (CHMS 7th-grade Math teacher), and Lina Tovar (Bloom Twp. Youth Outreach worker).

Those who helped the students with the clean-up shared the students' enthusiasm concerning the event.

"I had a really good time helping the students clean up the area on Saturday," Myers said. "I think the students enjoyed it as well, and I especially enjoyed having the chance to get to know them outside of the classroom."

"I had a blast being outside with our students and doing something positive for our neighborhood," added Tanis. "This activity presented us with the opportunity to connect with our students and our community, which is becoming increasingly important, especially after the pandemic."

The endeavor was the second clean-up event hosted by Park District Commissioner Perez. On April 23rd, Perez and four students helped clean up 26th Street's Jirtle Park and 22nd Street's Petrarca Park in honor of Earth Day.

On that day, workers collected four bags filled with refuse. Participants in that day's activity included CHMS students Mariela Hernandez (7th Grade) and Adalberto Martinez (8th Grade), high school students Iris Aldape and Marissa Newcomb, and Bloom Township workers Sonia Perez (2nd Ward Alderman) and Lina Tovar.

Un grupo de estudiantes de la escuela intermedia del Distrito Escolar 170 de Chicago Heights se unió a otros para participar en la reciente limpieza de toda la ciudad organizada por la concejala del segundo distrito Sonia Pérez y la maestra de ciencias de séptimo grado de CHMS y la comisionada del distrito de parques del segundo distrito Elizabeth Pérez .

La limpieza de toda la ciudad es un evento anual organizado por la ciudad de Chicago Heights para mantener la belleza de la ciudad. Como parte del proceso, se invitó a los residentes a dejar artículos grandes y desechos de jardín.

Durante los últimos siete años (excepto en 2020, cuando la pandemia de COVID-19 provocó la cancelación del evento), Second Ward ha recibido a estudiantes voluntarios del Distrito Escolar 170 y el Distrito Escolar 206 para ayudar a limpiar los vecindarios. "¡Mi experiencia ayudando el sábado fue excelente! Limpiar la basura para la comunidad era algo que quería hacer ya que se agregó a mi 'lista de deseos' para el verano", dijo Linda Joseph, estudiante de séptimo grado en CHMS.

"¡Esta fue una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida, y la parte más divertida fue cuando mis compañeros de clase y yo nos encontramos con una serpiente mientras clasificamos la basura! Quiero agradecer a la Sra. Pérez por permitirme una experiencia de la vida real mientras me divertía. con mis amigos."

Jaeden Martínez, otro estudiante de séptimo grado de CHMS, reafirmó los sentimientos positivos de su compañero de clase al decir: "Pensé que el día iba a ser aburrido, pero fue muy divertido y, bueno, al final del día, nos dieron buena comida"!

Otros estudiantes que participaron en el evento fueron los estudiantes de séptimo grado Johntae Britton y Gustavo Guttierez-Garcia, junto con las estudiantes de secundaria Iris Adalpe y Marrisa Newcombe.

Quienes ayudaron a los estudiantes con la limpieza compartieron el entusiasmo de los estudiantes por el evento.

"La pasé muy bien ayudando a los estudiantes a limpiar el área el sábado", dijo Myers. "Creo que los estudiantes también lo disfrutaron, y disfruté especialmente tener la oportunidad de conocerlos fuera del salón de clases".

"Me divertí mucho estando afuera con nuestros estudiantes y haciendo algo positivo por nuestro vecindario", agregó Tanis. “Esta actividad nos presentó la oportunidad de conectarnos con nuestros estudiantes y nuestra comunidad, que se está volviendo cada vez más importante, especialmente después de la pandemia”.

El esfuerzo fue el segundo evento de limpieza organizado por el Comisionado del Distrito de Parques Pérez. El 23 de abril, Pérez y cuatro estudiantes ayudaron a limpiar el Parque Jirtle de la Calle 26 y el Parque Petrarca de la Calle 22 en honor al Día de la Tierra.

Ese día, los trabajadores recogieron cuatro bolsas llenas de basura. Los participantes en la actividad de ese día incluyeron a los estudiantes de CHMS Mariela Hernandez (7° grado) y Adalberto Martinez (8° grado), los estudiantes de secundaria Iris Aldape y Marissa Newcomb, y las trabajadoras del municipio de Bloom Sonia Pérez (concejal del segundo distrito) y Lina Tovar.
