SD170's Garfield School's Cinco de Mayo Program

SD170's Garfield School's Cinco de Mayo Program

Chicago Heights School District 170’s Garfield School will present its annual Cinco de Mayo program at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 1st.

The event is an all-school program celebrating the historic Battle of San Puebla during which, on May 5, 1862, Mexican forces under General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin earned an unlikely victory over the French army of occupation, a harbinger of Mexico’s independence, still five years away.

Most importantly, however, the Cinco de Mayo celebration at Garfield School will serve as an expression of pride in, and a celebration of, the heritage and culture of the Mexican people.

The program will include participation by students of all grade levels, and performances will feature traditional Mexican folk dances, building decorations, poems, skits, and video presentations.

In addition to the families of students and members and friends of the Garfield School service community, those invited to attend the program include Mayor David A. L. Gonzalez of Chicago Heights, Mayor David Owen of South Chicago Heights, and representatives of Cornerstone Christian Center, and the National Council of Jewish Women.
