Semi Driver Was On Meth At Time Of Fatal Crash In Crete: Illinois State Police

A California man has been charged in an April 16 crash that killed a 40-year-old Chicago man, Illinois State Police said.

CRETE, IL — A California man has been arrested in connection with an April 16 crash that killed a 40-year-old Chicago man, Illinois State Police said Tuesday.

On April 16, state police investigated a two-vehicle fatal traffic crash at the intersection of Illinois 394 and Burrville Road in Crete. A semi was traveling eastbound on Burrville Road, and a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound on Illinois 394. The semi failed to yield while turning left, causing the front end of the Chevrolet to strike the semi’s trailer, state police said.

The Chevrolet went under the trailer of the semi. The driver of the Chevrolet, Joshua D. Kutz, 40, of Chicago, was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead.

ISP troopers arrested William D Fanning, 58, of Rancho Cucamonga, California. Fanning consumed methamphetamine before the fatal crash, according to police.

On April 18, the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of drugs involving death. Fanning is being held pending his first court appearance.
