Young Dog Fights for Survival at South Suburban Humane Society

An extremely thin 4-month-old shih tzu mix with distressed eyes was brought to the shelter this week.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL - A young dog was dropped off at the South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights on Wednesday in poor shape, but staff at the humane society have already begun to care for her and help her recovery.

The dog, named 'Helen Keller' by the staff because she was brought in on International Women's Day, is a four-month-old shih tzu mix described as "severely emaciated" and with both eyes in distress.

"She is too ill to face eye surgery yet so we are providing round the clock care to her to get her condition stabilized," the humane society wrote on Facebook. "She has urine burns on her body and we believe was crated her entire short life."

It was a relative of Helen's owner who brought the dog in to the shelter, according to the post.

The humane society is accepting donations for Helen through its website and Facebook page.
