WOODSTOCK — Six people were displaced and more than a dozen cats remain unaccounted for after an early morning apartment fire Wednesday in Woodstock, officials said.
The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded at 1:01 a.m. to the 600 block of Clay Street, where crews found a heavy fire coming from the second floor of a two-story wood-frame home, according to a news release.
The building contained four apartments, and all occupants were able to safely evacuate before crews arrived. The upper front unit where the fire was concentrated is considered a total loss, while the remaining apartments sustained smoke and water damage, with some belongings salvaged, fire officials said.
More than 15 cats are believed to be missing from the apartment where the fire started, and the American Red Cross is assisting six displaced residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District.
