Gas Prices Are Falling Ahead Of Summer Travel Season. Will It Last?

Chicago-area drivers are paying about $4.58 a gallon on average as of June 1.

CHICAGO AREA, IL — Gas prices are continuing to fall nationwide, giving drivers some relief as the busy summer travel season gets underway, according to AAA.

AP reported that gas prices have been falling because crude oil prices dropped amid reports of possible peace talks involving Iran, easing concerns about major supply disruptions in global energy markets.

The decline comes after weeks of volatility tied to tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments. AAA said lower oil costs have helped push down prices at the pump, though the organization warned prices could rise again if geopolitical tensions escalate or summer travel demand increases.

While prices are dropping, Illinois drivers continue to pay among the highest rates in the region. As of June 1, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the Chicago metro area was about $4.58, according to AAA.

AAA said additional declines are possible if oil markets remain stable, but prices could rise again if demand increases sharply during the summer or if supply disruptions occur.
