MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — A 24-year-old Chicago man has been charged after authorities say he drove under the influence and crashed an SUV into the Wauconda Fire District station while firefighters were sleeping inside, causing about $100,000 in damage, according to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner.
Police said the crash happened shortly after midnight when the driver allegedly ran a stop sign on Route 59 and left the roadway before crossing a grassy area and Route 176. The SUV then struck the front of Fire Station 1 on West Liberty Street, hitting the administrative office area of the building, according to the Scanner report.
Fire officials said personnel were asleep in other areas of the station at the time and no firefighters or other occupants were injured. The station sustained significant structural damage, but operations were not impacted, according to fire officials.
