LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Board has voted to temporarily ban new data center developments in unincorporated areas of Lake County.
The decision comes amid concerns raised by residents and officials about the potential impacts of large-scale data centers on infrastructure, energy demand, and the environment. County leaders said the moratorium will pause new approvals while officials review zoning rules and evaluate long-term regulations for such facilities, according to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner.
Supporters of the measure said the projects raise “serious concerns” about strain on local resources and community impacts, while some stakeholders have pushed back over economic development benefits, according to the Scanner report.
The temporary ban will remain in place as county officials continue studying how to regulate future data center proposals, according to the article.
