MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — An Elgin man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after a McHenry County jury found him guilty of drug-induced homicide in connection with a fatal fentanyl overdose.
Ladell D. Walker Sr., 48, was sentenced Thursday by McHenry Judge Tiffany Davis following his May 7 conviction.
Prosecutors said Walker arranged a meeting with the victim in Elgin on Sept. 10, 2023, through phone calls and text messages and delivered narcotics containing fentanyl, according to a news release.
During the trial, investigators used cellphone records, text messages and location data to show when and where Walker met with the victim for the drug transaction. Prosecutors said evidence presented at trial proved the fentanyl Walker provided caused the victim’s fatal overdose, prosecutors said.
The jury convicted Walker after a multi-day trial.
Under Illinois truth-in-sentencing laws, Walker must serve 75 percent of his 16-year sentence before being eligible for release, according to prosecutors.
