Man Charged With Reckless Homicide In Fatal Crash

Prosecutors allege driver was traveling 76 mph before SUV crash killed 70-year-old Huntley woman in January 2025.

A South Elgin man has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with a January 2025 crash in Carpentersville that killed a 70-year-old Huntley woman.

Matthew Hinde, 39, also faces charges of speeding 26 to 34 mph over the limit and driving too fast for conditions, according to Kane County court records. Prosecutors allege Hinde was traveling 76 mph shortly before the crash at Randall and Binnie roads, where his SUV struck a vehicle driven by Maria Drinkwater as she attempted to turn left, according to the Daily Herald.

Hinde turned himself in Monday and was released from custody after a judge determined detention was not necessary because he is no longer driving. His attorney said Hinde’s license was medically disqualified due to a neurological condition, and that he was not impaired at the time of the crash, according to the Daily Herald.
