Stalled Freight Train Blocks Grayslake Crossings For Hours, Delays Emergency Response

Freight train stopped traffic at three crossings for hours Thursday, forcing emergency crews to take alternate routes.

GRAYSLAKE, IL — A stalled freight train blocked three Grayslake railroad crossings for about four hours Thursday evening, causing traffic backups and creating challenges for emergency responders.

The Canadian National Railway train appeared to suffer a mechanical issue around 5:30 p.m., blocking crossings at Center Street, Route 120 and Route 83 near Route 137, according to Lake & McHenry County Scanner. The Grayslake Fire Protection District had to use alternate routes while responding to calls, including sending an ambulance from another station because the train delayed access.
