Teen Seriously Hurt After E-Bike Fails To Yield Near Crystal Lake: Police

A 15-year-old was airlifted to Lurie Children's Hospital after the electric bike collided with a car near Crystal Lake.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — A 15-year-old remains hospitalized in serious condition after an electric bicycle collided with a car Wednesday afternoon near Crystal Lake, according to authorities.

The crash happened at about 1 p.m. on Aug. 5 at Walkup Road and Dvorak Drive in unincorporated Crystal Lake, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.

A preliminary investigation shows the child was riding a Super73 Class II electric bicycle westb near Dvorak Drive when the bike crossed Walkup Road and collided with a northbound 2017 Ford C-Max, according to authorities. For reasons that remain under investigation, the electric bike failed to yield to the Ford while crossing the roadway, police said.

The 15-year-old was taken by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital before being airlifted to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. The child remains in serious condition.

The 66-year-old Crystal Lake woman driving the Ford was not injured and is cooperating with investigators, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office, Crystal Lake Police Department and Crystal Lake Fire Department responded to the crash.

The Sheriff's Office Major Crash Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate. No additional information about possible citations or charges was immediately available.
