Lake Co. Approves Plan For Waste Transfer Facility Near Grayslake

Proposed facility would replace the Grayslake landfill when it closes in 2028.

GRAYSLAKE, IL — Lake County officials approved the Waste Management of Illinois' application for a waste transfer station that would replace the Countryside landfill in Grayslake when it closes in 2028.

The proposed Meadowview Material Transfer Facility would be built on 11 acres east of Route 83 and could handle up to 1,000 tons of nonhazardous municipal waste per day, the Daily Herald is reporting. The project includes a recycling center and 13 special conditions approved by the county, including limits on operating hours.

The application now moves to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for potential final approval, and construction would take about 18 months if approved.
