Coroner IDs Cary Teen Who Died From Gunshot Wound: Authorities

CARY, IL — A 14-year-old Cary boy who died Saturday afternoon suffered a fatal gunshot wound, authorities said Monday.

Ryan Alexander Marin, 14, of Cary, was pronounced dead at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital after Cary police and firefighters were called to a home in the 300 block of Carl Sands Drive at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office.

Police said officers responding to what was initially reported as an unknown medical emergency were met by occupants of the home, who directed them to a teenage boy who had suffered a traumatic injury.

Ryan was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

An autopsy was performed Monday at the Lake County Coroner's Office. Preliminary results showed Ryan died from a gunshot wound, according to the coroner.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been released.

The Cary Police Department is investigating the death with assistance from the Major Investigations Assistance Team, or MIAT.

Marin is being remembered as a kind and generous teenager who loved helping others, according to his obituary.

"His compassion, helpful nature, and genuine kindness touched the lives of so many," his obituary reads.

Ryan was passionate about soccer and played for the Cary Soccer Association and the junior varsity soccer team at Cary-Grove High School.

His obituary said teammates and coaches will remember him for his love of the game as well as "the friendship, kindness, and camaraderie he shared with those around him."

A visitation will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Cardinal Funeral Home. A funeral Mass is scheduled for noon at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cary, followed by interment at Windridge Cemetery.
