βPeople living in low-lying or flooded areas could face significant challenges," David Christensen, EMA Director for McHenry County, states on the webpage. βBy taking certain precautions now, they can protect themselves from floodβrelated illness or injury. Knowing what can and canβt hurt them is important.β
- Β Have an emergency kit on hand β enough supplies for 72 hours
First aid kit, essential medications; non-perishable food/canned food with can opener; 3 gallons of water per person; personal hygiene (soap, toothpaste); protective clothing, rain gear, sleeping bags; insect repellants; battery-powered radio/flashlight with extra batteries; special items for infants/elderly/disabled family members; pre-identified evacuation locations.Β
- Identify essential documents (place medical records, insurance cards, ID card in plastic containers)
Be aware that flash flooding can occur. If this happens, move immediately to higher ground. Do not wait for instructions to move.
- If you must, evacuateΒ Β
Save yourself, not your belongings; your safety is more important. Turn off utilities at the main switches, or valves if instructed to do so; disconnect electrical appliances; donβt touch electrical equipment if standing in water.
- Stay away from floodwaters
If you come upon a flowing stream, turn around and go another way. Six inches of moving water can sweep you off your feet.Β
- Do not drive in flooded waters
If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground.
- Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.
- Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
- Keep children and pets away from hazardous sites and floodwaters.Β
