CL Council Considers Parking Restrictions Near Canterbury School

Residents living near Canterbury School say traffic and parking for nearby baseball fields has created a problem on their streets.

Traffic and parking has become a problem for homeowners near Canterbury Elementary School in Crystal Lake.

Residents living near the school are accustomed to dealing with school traffic, but when spring arrives, "baseball" traffic comes with it. Several Little League baseball fields are located at and near Canterbury, 875 Canterbury Dr.

During the April 16 city council meeting, leaders discussed ordinance changes that would implement parking restrictions along Canterbury, Aberdeen Drive, Denton Court and Cardiff Crive.

The council is expected to vote on the ordinance changes at its regularly scheduled meeting tonight, Tuesday, May 7, at City Hall, 100 W. Woodstock St.

The new restrictions would eliminate eliminate the "unusual" change between sides of the street for on-street parking and provide a configuration consistent with other schools in the community, city documents show.

The new restrictions also limit the number of parking spaces per block, and decrease the need for pedestrians to cross the street between parked cars.

The proposed ordinance restricts on-street parking to one side of the street for the following roads near Canterbury School:

  • Canterbury Drive (Berkshire Drive to Surrey Lane)
  • Aberdeen Drive (Teverton Lane to Cardiff Drive)
  • Denton Court (Aberdeen Drive to Surrey Lane)
  • Cardiff Drive (Aberdeen Drive to Surrey Lane)

Additional restrictions will be posted from 3 to 4 p.m. on school days in selected areas.
