1 No Vote For New Hinsdale D86 Board Member

A member rejected the school board's choice to fill a vacancy.

HINSDALE, IL – The newest member on the Hinsdale High School District 86 board received one dissenting vote when the board appointed him Thursday.

Board member Jeff Waters was the lone vote against Dr. Abed Rahman of Willowbrook.

Four other members, Catherine Greenspon, Peggy James, Kay Gallo and Asma Akhras, supported Rahman, a physician.

Member Terri Walker, who was connected remotely for part of the meeting, was not present for the vote on Rahman.

During the vote, Waters explained his decision.

"I wanted to welcome the new board member to the board. I certainly support the will of the board," Waters said. "The particular placement did not align with my personal criteria, but we are fortunate to have Mr. Rahman join the board. I welcome you to the board. With all that said, I do vote no."

Shortly after Rahman took the oath, Waters shook Rahman's hand.

Earlier, Waters said the board was fortunate to draw 17 applicants for the seat, which was left vacant by the sudden departure of Debbie Levinthal last month.

"It's unfortunate we can only place one," he said.
