The Adventist Hinsdale Hospital lactation team hosted a fun-filled event on August 8th to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1-7) at the hospital. Guests included local mothers, La Leche League leaders and many small business owners that are proud breastfeeding advocates such as Itzy Ritzy, Dough and a Dear Designs and Attachment Parenting International. They debuted their businesses with tables in an effort to show these mothers the support they have right here in their community.

The event featured a guest appearance by the “4th Trimester Bodies Project,” most recently seen on Good Morning America and The Today Show. Creator Ashlee Wells-Jackson shared her photo-documentary dedicated to embracing the beauty, inherent in the changes brought to women’s bodies through motherhood, childbirth and breastfeeding.

Community Partnership Specialist, Emily DeAno, spearheaded the project of making this event come to life. “I became a new mother two years ago and strived to find like-minded people that supported my mommy intuitions,” DeAno said. “It has since become my mission to empower my parenting peers with the same knowledge and support that made me successful at breastfeeding.”

In addition, Medela sponsored a community screening of the new breastfeeding documentary “The Milky Way.”,

“The movie pointed out how cultural changes need to occur to help new mothers achieve their breastfeeding goals, and improve the health of our country,” said Patty Janicek, RN, Lactation Consultant, commented.

The Mother’s Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes educated moms on milk donation and announced that the new outpatient breastfeeding center and boutique “The Nurturing Nook” will be a milk depot for the milk bank, a place where mothers with excess breast milk can drop off their breast milk to be donated to the milk bank.

The Nurturing Nook will be located on the campus of Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and all services including the weekly breastfeeding support group will be offered to any mother in the community. It is under development and projected to open in October.
