Darien Home Invasion Suspect To Be Jailed Until Trial

Police detail their case against the man, who is accused of injuring a homeowner during the invasion.

DARIEN, IL – A man who is accused of a Darien home invasion was ordered to be held in jail until his trial, prosecutors said Thursday.

The man was identified as Michael Lahey, 32, of Homer Glen. He faces two felony counts of home invasion, a felony count of aggravated fleeing and a misdemeanor theft count.

About 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Darien police were called about a home invasion in the 1400 block of Sequoia Lane. A homeowner reported that a man had broken into his house.

In a news release, prosecutors alleged the homeowner heard a sound like breaking glass and, when he went to investigate, saw a stranger later identified as Lahey outside the house.

Lahey threw a piece of broken glass at the victim, causing significant cuts to his arm and torso, then entered through the broken front window and took the victim's cellphone, police said.

Police also alleged the man threw a stool at the victim, striking him. The victim escaped through the back door and was taken to a local hospital for his injuries, police said. He was later released.

When officers arrived, the victim pointed them toward a speeding Ford Bronco heading west on Sequoia Lane, police said. A chase started.

Authorities alleged Lahey drove over a curb and through a parking lot, reached speeds above 75 mph in 35 mph zones, sped through a construction zone with workers present and drove into oncoming traffic several times.

Because of safety concerns, officers ended the chase after 11 miles because of safety concerns, prosecutors. By that point, they were in Will County.

Lahey was later found at his home on Maverick Trail in Homer Glen, police said.

Members of SWAT teams went to his home. After hours of negotiations, Lahey was arrested, police said.

"Though tragic, I am very proud of the investigation and arrest of the alleged offender," Darien Police Chief Greg Thomas said in a statement. "Officers did a great job in the investigation leading to the arrest and officers making the arrest were able to do so without incident."
