Darien Home Invasion Suspect Upset About Grandmother's Home: Police

DARIEN, IL – A man accused of a Darien home invasion had some issue involving his nearby grandmother's house, a police report indicates.

Through a public records request, Patch obtained the report on the arrest of Michael Lahey, 32, of Homer Glen.

Police said Lahey invaded a house on the afternoon of Aug. 4 in the 1400 block of Sequoia Lane.

A man in the house reported that he heard breaking glass and then saw a shirtless stranger outside, later identified as Lahey, police said.

Lahey is then accused of entering the house through a broken front window and throwing glass at the victim, injuring the resident's arm and torso, police said.

Next, Lahey threw a stool at the victim, stole the victim's phone and said something about the victim stealing his grandmother's home, according to the report.

Lahey left, but was tracked to his home on Maverick Trail in Homer Glen, police said. That resulted in a standoff that lasted a few hours and involved a SWAT team, but ended peacefully, authorities said.

In a later interview, Lahey's father said his son lived alone. He described him as "very intelligent" and said he recently graduated; the institution's name was redacted from the report.

Lahey's father said his son's grandmother lived on Sequoia Lane until she died five years ago. According to the report, the father said his son prepared to visit his grandmother several months ago in Darien, but got into a crash on the way and never went.

The report said an officer interviewed Lahey after he was arrested, but the record of it was included in a supplemental report. Patch asked police for that report, but it denied the request, saying "custodial interrogation records" are exempt from the state's open records law.

Lahey faces two felony counts of home invasion, a felony count of aggravated fleeing and a misdemeanor theft count.

Home invasions are rare in Darien and other suburbs.

In November 2019, such an invasion occurred in a Darien neighborhood. A Chicago man was later convicted and sentenced to 31 years in prison.
