Biggert: Debt Deal Imperfect Part of Solution

U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert (R-13th) applauded the last-minute debt-ceiling bill the House passed Monday as “a solid compromise that will help put this economy on a stronger path.”

The bill, which passed just hours before many analysts predicted the U.S. would reach its borrowing limit, gained House approval by a vote of 269-161. Biggert was one of 174 Republicans to favor the bill, while 95 Democrats gave their support.

The Senate voted to pass the bill Tuesday, and President Obama signed it into law shortly after.

Cuts in the bill are expected to save the U.S. nearly $1 trillion over the next 10 years, according to Congressional Budget Office analysis. The bill also calls for the formation of a 12-member bipartisan committee that would craft a proposal to reduce the deficit by at least $1.5 trillion over the next decade.

“[The bill] will give Americans the peace of mind they deserve by preventing a default, cutting spending and holding Congress and the president accountable for spending decisions down the road,” Biggert said in a statement.

Biggert's district stretches from Aurora to Joliet and includes Darien, Lemont, Hinsdale and Burr Ridge.

Although Biggert said that the bill is “not perfect” she said it will help heal the battered U.S. economy by reeling in debt, which will eventually spur job growth.
